View Full Version : Got My New Engine--Or Did I???
Well, I went by the dealer to pick up my car after the new engine was installed. Car sounds fine, runs quiet and smooth, and seems OK so far.
BUT--I have a couple of small doubts.
As we all know, FLM dealers/wrenches know NOTHING about these cars. Sorry Ray, Carfixer and a few others, you know that I'm not talking about any of you, just FLM dealers in general. Soooo, I talked to the service writer for a long time impressing upon him the fact that he needed to order a MM engine, not a GM engine, a CVPI engine, or anything else.
I looked at the new engine, and overall it looks real close to the old one, with a few exceptions (that I have seen so far).
1. Oil filler cap says Engine Oil, not 5-20 like my old one said. Minor, I know, but it stood out to me.
2. On my old engine, there was a row of "studs" or "posts" BELOW the coil covers. The wiring harness had some female clips that attached to the posts.
On the new engine, there is a row of bolts below the coil cover and the posts are ABOVE the coil cover.
3. The work order says the following:
Options: DLR:52B241 ENG:4.6 Liter_DOHC TRN: 4R70W
AXL: 56 1) MERAUDER ENGINE- LIKE POLICE INTERCEPTOR
2) COMPATIBLE TO MACH 1 ENGINE 3) CAL- 3FB1MB0A
Yes, they misspelled "Merauder" just like I put it above.
They said "Like Police Interceptor", when I specifically told the guy that it was NOT like the PI!
The parts list for the invoice shows the engine as
3W3Z*6006*ABRM REMAN SERVICE ENGINE ASY
OK, somebody help me, please.
Do I have an MM engine or not? How can I know for sure?
If it is an MM engine, how can I tell if it is an 03 or maybe an 04?
Why doesn't GM start making REAL Impala SS's again so I don't have to go through this?
Thanks for any info in advance. Your frustrated friend.

Ross, it should be obvious from the heads if its a MM engine. The CVPI engine is a 2V and physically different looking. The Mustang Mach 1 engine is the same as a MM engine.

Mach 1 automatic and the Marauder have the same engine. I do not understand the CVPI reference. ???

Exactly. That's just the kind of thing that gives me the heebie jeebies. What kind of folks are working on these cars?

They probably think the PI's have a 32v engine, remember "Cop motor". Doesn't mean much these days, but everyone still thinks it does.
The work order stated "DOHC" and "Compatible to MACH 1" so it seems clear that you do have a 32v engine. The fact that it stats "TRN: 4R70W" indicates its designed for an automatic which would match our engine internally.
I'd say you sound OK. There could be minor differences in where studs sit, that's understandable. (I mean external studs.) The MACH I has a smaller engine bay so it may have external mounting studs in different spots due to space constraints and wire routing differences. And I'd expect Ford to stock reman's on the Mach 1 flavor than the Marauder flavor of that engine, seeing as though I'm betting there are more Mach 1s out there. And, there could be minor differences though between different years of engines.
Do the visual check to be sure it's not a 2V. Or do the seat of the pants test. ;)
Really since the remanufactured engine was probably a long block it's impossible for it to be a 2V unless they totally switched on you. (i.e. defrauded you.)
The fact is your accessories wouldn't quite bolt up, might need different motormounts etc. It'd be a pain (i'd imagine) to inadvertanly swap in a 2V. And if it was a long block you'd need to bolt the 4V intake to the 2V engine.
To my understanding, that would not be an easy thing to mix up.

Your car wouldnt even be running right unless they installed a CV PCM as well.
Dont forget there's a guy that writes info into the OASIS computer, he cant spell.
Glad to hear the dealer covered it under extended warranty!

Well, the bad news is, it wasn't covered under the warranty, it was all out of pocket. There will be another thread on that today.

In the future we should ask for the Aviator engine. It's the identical engine to ours. The L/M service writers should understand that.

That is the correct Part #, the shipping lable also has Marauder4V printed on it.
The Black cam covers make it a '03, the 2004's came plain aluminim. when was it built?

Hi,
It seems like you got a 4V which is fine. The thing I wonder about is the heads.
I believe there is an upgraded head produced for these motors. I did a few quick searches of the site and didn't find a way to ID them visually. It may be in here somewhere.
I hope Ford would include the upgrade on any reman. Anybody know how to eyeball it? Can the part #'s be read with the motor in?

It's definately close...but not exact.
Here's mine. You'll see the difference right off.

Why did they use the Mach1 version?
when was it built?
How can I tell when it was built? Or rebuilt, I guess?

look for a label on the valve cover. More than likely, it came from AER out of Dallas, an Authorized Ford Engine rebuilder

According to Ford's CPD ( computer parts display ),there are 3 possible engine replacement numbers for your year MM. They are 3W3Z6006AARM (which changes to p/n 3W3Z6006ABRM) and 3W3Z6006BARM which is only used for engines with different ID tags. I can not tell you what the differences are in these engines, but it appears that the correct p/n was used for your replacement. Hope this helps ease your mind.
Thanks for all of the help, guys.

The first replacement engine in my car didn't run! My credit card company was having problems, so it took longer than normal to approve the transaction. While the cashier was talking on the phone, I had time to read all the service notes that you normally don't get to see.
The diagnosis from the Ford tech support was that the engine was mis built! So, they had to order another one.
I know what you mean about doubting the work done by some dealers. During the two engine removals and installations, they managed to:
1. cross thread my transmission cooler line bracket to engine bolt.
2. Mis-install the power steering pump pulley (the thing ate a belt in less than 100 miles)
3. mis-route the battery cable, and other assorted, wiring and hoses.
4. Leave out a starter bolt.
5. damage my transmission dipstick tube, causing a major leak.
6. Not diagnose two bad axles.
I fixed 1,3 and 4 myself.
I brought it back to those bozos for number 2, where they left trash in my car and got makeup on my seatbelt.
I wisely consulted the fine "Southern Marauder" folks, who told me where to go! (for great service.)
They got everything fixed up, and, since the rear end cover had to come out anyway, installed 4.10 gears and an art carr transmission pan from Dennis! Things got better fast, but I know firsthand why you were worried!!

as long as you didn't go to koons ford in sat you should be fine. They refused to fix my car and also destroyed my key in the process of not fixing the car. after shipping the car to va they gladly accepted the warrenty work and laughed at the printout koons in sat gave me for why they didn't fix it.
