Draining the tranny fluid last nite and could not find a drain plug on my stock torque converter.

Do some not have them? My new PI does not.

50-50 shot here. Pull the rubber plug on the lower part of the bellhousing. Have someone "bump" the engine to see if there is a drain plug. According to the tech who o/h'd my trans, he said that I my MM has one.

Torque converters are not made with drain plugs.
Never have been, never will be...

When you spin your engine at 6,000 rpm, do you want the drain plug
flying out when the Torque Converter expands ?

My 99 CVPI had one as well as the F150, just a small plug with sealer on the end, Changed the fluid many times, no issues.

Never have been, never will be...Um, yes they were...I can't speak for other brands, but up until about 2001 all RWD Fords had them...

The C4 in my 72 Fastback didn't have one, and neither did the FMX
that went in aftere I burned up the C4.

We had to tap the converter ourselves and it wasn't fun either...

My 59 Cadillac has a drain plug in the converter.

When I worked for GM I saw a bulletin from back in the early 80's that had a repair for a transmission complaint that told the tech to drain the convertor.

I think it was the TH200 and it didn't have a removable plug either. Many transmissions have had plugs over the years but most stopped using them because of leak problems.

What the bulletin told the tech to do in order to drain the convertor was to drill a hole about 1/4" away from the weld and (after the fluid drained out) to install a special pop-rivet in the hole.

I knew an old-timer that said he had done this many times and they never leaked.

Go figure.

Your experience is very different from mine.
I've owned a bunch of Mustangs and other Fords over the years, and every C4, C6, and AOD I've ever worked on had
a drain plug in the converter, unless it was aftermarket. Oh, and also the MX in my son's '63 Merc. Now, I won't claim
that ALL Fords had 'em, but I will say all Ford flexplates had the _holes_ for 'em... :burnout:

As for why Ford has eliminated the drain plugs, leaks had nothing to do with it. Never been a problem. It's a pipe plug.
Decontenting the drain plug was a cost-cutting move. Nothing more, nothing less. One less hole drilled, one less hole
tapped, one less plug installed.

Some manufacturers, when they spotted offering them on new models, also stopped offering them on service replacement units as well. Chrysler did this, from what my mechanic cousin told me a few years back, sometime in the mid 70s... so if you have a pre-mid-70s Chrysler with a replacement converter, it might not have the plug whereas an original might.

For years, I hadn't even heard of a converter drain plug and thought the only way to drain a converter was with that drill&rivet method!

Using the rivet method is how i was taught, but thats before the flushing machine. I just had my 03 grand marquis done last week $120.00 ouch!
