What can I use to loosen the DS flange bolts on the pinion Flange. I found a shop that can give my DS a good spin and balance. I tried once before and darn...dem bolts are good and tight.

If I recall, I used a 12mm 12 point swivel socket on a short extension with a breaker bar to remove the U-joint retainer bolts, then I slid the driveshaft out of the transmission.
Its takes no more then 5 minutes tops to remove the shaft.

Dont Drop it!!!

Soak the bolts w/WD-40 or an equivalent. Use a very good socket that fits tightly onto the bolt head.

Be very careful to not strip the bolt heads!

It is also recommended not to re-use the bolts. See you L/M delaer for new bolts prior to re-install.

You've got a PM...

^^^ What he said ^^^;)

The bolts probably have lock tight on the threads.

Ive heard this for head bolts, crank pulley bolts, main bearing cap bolts, and connecting rod bolts, Not for Driveshaft retainer bolts.
Can I ask you why?
Im not doubting this as a fact, I personally inspected the bolts and then I used loc-tight when I replaced them. The guy who installed my gears never mentioned anything about replacing the bolts. He just wanted me to pick up the friction modifier fluid and a new pinion seal from the dealer.

Best to draw a chalk line from the tranny tail shaft through the shaft, to pinion to make sure you reinstall it in the same position it came from the factory.

Ya think it's out of balance?

May I ask why?

Must be that annoying vibration at 140mph

Naw...it is that 80 mph harmonic vib since the 4:10 have been in.

The bolts have a Loctite patch that is "encapsulated" or dry to the touch prior to use. Once the bolts are used the capsule is broken thus allowing the patch to cure. I believe ~48 hours.

Removing the bolts renders the patch useless, and now have a contaminated bolt.

There are also issues of possible bolt fatigue and stretching of the threads during install then removal.

Bolts do not cost that much, and is recommended to replace them after one use for the above reasons.

please explain. When I did my gears, The Rear rotors were nearly impossible to remove without using a hammer. Well after the installation I had a vibration like you are talking about at 80mph without touching the brake pedal.
After installing new rotors the vibration went away. Is it possible that you may have had the same experience??
I didnt have my driveshaft balanced after my install and the the rotors were the only vibration I felt.

I hadn't done anything else to the rear other than than the 4:10s. She is smooth and managable when the brakes are applied at any speed.

If what he said /\/\/\ was done when they installed the gears, you might not have this issue today. It wouldn't hurt to have it balanced anyway! If problems persist, every F,L & M dealer has a killer NVH tester that balances the shaft in situ. Unfortunately, as with anything else, it needs to be in the right hands to be effective.

Best of luck,

J

Might have to use a smoke wrench on those bolts.......................
