View Full Version : I sold my Marauder
2003 MIB
03-08-2006, 07:00 AM
I'm not going anywhere but the car is gone. If someone wanted to compare my situation to Donny Carlson's- they'd be accurate and I'd be flattered.
If anyone can guess the replacement vehicle- I will send you a set of anti-theft godshead valve stem caps. Let the games begin. I will provide the following hints:
It does not have four dours.
It is not an American car.
It is not a V8.
It is not a ragtop.
Let the games begin....

Ya know, I owe y'all more of the story...
At the end of the day...the compromise is a major factor. We went to the auto show last Sunday and I wanted something fun that everyone could enjoy.
You folks who know me, know that I had a truly bizarre relationship with the Marauder. I had a "no park" zone around her at home. I never drove (18K in 32 months including MVII) her because I knew I'd have to park her someplace where she'd be prone to dings, nicks or fingerprints. The obsession was so striong that Coli wouldn't drive the car knowing that if something happened it would kill me. I would inspect any of the kids before they could sit it. It was a running theme in our household that if I made a sacred promise, I would "swear on the Marauder".
A few months ago, the car was egged in the driveway (cover was on, no damage- "friends" of teenaged daughters) and something snapped inside me- :nono: insomnia, weight loss, mood swings, anger, depression etc.. I withdrew from club activities and focused on my new son- that's a good thing (maybe even a message?). This vehicle touched a place in me that was very "Christine"- No, I'm not kidding. I hope this makes sense to y'all but to me, the car needed to go because I loved her too much.
Do I like the new roadster? Yes, I really do but I don't ever want to be as emotional linked as I was the Marauder. My happiness will never again be so closely bonded to an automobile. If that makes me a wuss or now I'm driving some girly, underpowered car- so be it. This car is quicker and more nimble than my particular Marauder:eek: - a blast to drive and my household will be a happier place without everyone walking on eggshells around the Marauder.
Hell, I let the boy chew gum in the Mercedes on the first drive...I think that says it all:D
Oh, I know the rest of the world (outside of mm.net) wouldn't even come close to understanding where I was at with the Marauder so I tell them I found a grey chest hair and wanted a sports car. Y'all know the truth, Coli knows the truth- screw the rest the world.

Go in peace my friend. The Marauder community has lost a very, very special DRIVER.
I truly understand the demons you were struggling with and I'm sure many others here
do too. I always thought that was considered normal though. Of the many vices I enjoy
I never considered Marauder Compulsive Behavior abnormal. One thing is for sure
this site and all of us here are better for having known you and your lovely wife.
So go sow your wild oats with your new and fun car. When you feel that your mind is right again
go buy another Marauder (or you same one if you can find it) and return with us to those
thrilling days at Marauder Nation.
We'll keep the light on for you.

First, I want to give you a big CONGRATS on the new ride. I think that the "new" SLKs are 10 times what they were when first appeared. They easily compete if not beat the Boxer in many ways. It is nice and you shall enjoy it. There is no way in the world that I would have placed my trophies, plate from MV-I, etc. in the trunk. You earned those items. I would have kept them for the great memories. Besides, they will never mean as much to the new owner as they did to you who earned them.
P.S. I have no such trophies or a MV-I plate.

I kept and will keep several artifacts- at this moment my office wall has the 8X10s at Indy for MVII. I simply have too much "pack rat" stuff, ya know?
I looked at the Boxster but needed a hardtop roadster to secure firearms. My choices were Lexus 430 (yawn) or Caddy XLR (couldn't afford it) or this SLK.

Amen.
Buy what you like and let the American marketers figure out where they have to be. LOL. Who am I kidding. They're marketers couldn't get it right if you stamped the answers on their forhead.
Be happy with what you

No blood- no foul from my perspective, Bro. I believe in your right to express your opinion. At the end of the day, what I drive isn't guided by anything other than myself and my accountant (who I get to sleep with).:D

I got a chance to look at one this weekend in your color and trim. Very nice. Build quality on Mercedes is outstanding.
How long is your roof cycle time? Does it take up all your trunk space? Do you have to be in Park to cycle the roof?

Thanks Donny! 22 seconds. Very little- there's a cargo cover in the trunk that serves as a barrier between your stacked cargo and the stowed roof. Yes, it needs to be in Park. I'm digging the car so far.

You package will be going out Monday.
Receipt acknowledged. I'll begin packing the goods on Saturday morning and will ship Monday (I'll PM tracking numbers). Coli is very excited about having storage space in the shed. Horse pizza and Jack Daniels- you bet!! Y'all always have a place to stay in Johnson County.
Shora and Merc: Your stuff went out last week and I hope you enjoy.
All y'all: As I find more stuff, I'll put it up in the classified or find some interesting way to distribute to the group. Stay tuned.:D

That's close to my SSR's cycle time. Manual says 30 seconds, but I timed it at 20. According to the SSR project manager who posts in the SSR forum occasionally, they designed it so that you can lower or raise the top at a red light, so you need only push on the brake for it to allow cycling and not have to be in park. And we have a stowage area behind the cab where the panels store in a vertical position, not reducing any space in the "bed".
Still, I'd MUCH rather have an SLK ;)
With warm weather lately, it's been great running around with the top down.
