Hello All,
Where do they (they tire balance/mount people) put the weights on the rim to keep the tire/wheel balanced?

Well, if you got a good shop doing the balancing, the weights they use will be the stick on type. They will be placed on the inside of the wheel out of sight. A good shop would never use the kind that are beat onto the rim. My $.02s. I also specifically request that they use the stick on weights when I get them balanced and have never had any trouble with the tires being out of balance or the weights flying off!

M03,
Thanks for the info...where should I look for them to be located at. Should I llok thru the spokes around the inner wheel smooth surface?

yep some could be towards the outside of the wheel some inside, for whats called dynamic balance; i.e. side to side.

...but of course that's EXACTLY what they did to the nice 17" spoked wheels on my Crown Vic LX Sport... TWICE! :shake:
Right after I bought the car I noticed it was pulling to the right all the time, it so I took it back to the dealer for service. Not only was the alignment all messed up, the wheels were all UNBALANCED too. (How the heck does THAT happen?!) So... the weights were pried off the outside of my nice wheels, small scratches were left where the weights were, and they proceeded to beat some NEW weights on... again- to the outside of the rim.

Vic would'nt you think that anyone I mean anyone who had a ounce a sense would know better than to scar up any alloy wheels.
My buddies 02 vette has polished wheels and some nimrod pounded the weight on the outside of the wheel!:po:

Yes, I would certainly think so chapel. A few years ago when I needed new tires for my '96 Crown Vic, I took it to a small independant tire shop in a nearby town. When I went to pick the car up I noticed there were no longer any weights on the outside of my 16" HPP alloy wheels. Thinking the mechanic forgot to balance my new tires, I questioned the lack of weights. He told me, "I put the weights on the insides of your rims. It seemed like a shame to ruin the looks of your nice alloy wheels by putting those ugly weights on them where everyone can see them!" Believe me, I became a loyal customer of that tire shop from that day on!
Unfortunately, most mechanics just don't care about the cars they work on- it's just a "business" to them, I guess. :depress:

In addition, count the weights (total weight in oz.'s)
Anything over 2oz. is wrong. I only go to a shop that does
"road force" balancing. $25 (or more) per wheel. $35,000 machine. If the wheel requires more than 2oz.'s the computer fails it, and attempts to determine if the problem is in the wheel, or internally in the tire.
I sent back 3 of 4 michellin pilots to tire rack last summer. They will attest to this as well, and gladly swap tires.
Let's see the guy at the corner shop even try to understand this concept, and just keep sticken' weights on till his little balancer lines up.
Wonder why the car shakes and shimmies, and no one can clear it up???
