Hey guys,

Just signed up. I'm currently shopping for an 03-04 Marauder. A couple guys in my club run the trilogy setup bigslim and mikesmerc. I'm planning on doing the same thing. Maybe not right away but definitely in the plans. Just wanted to say hello!

Oh, also wondering. I know I'll need at least 93 for the trilogy setup but while the car is NA is it possible to run 87 octane without issues? I don't have a problem with premium but I just came from an 04 GTO and that thing sucked the gas down. Marauders get pretty good mileage?

Ford says 91 octane or higher in the Marauder. I've only and will only put 93 or higher octane (with more mods down the road). I mean in all honest its a matter of a $7-12 difference with a fill up or 87 or 93 with a 19 gallon fill up. The Marauder should get better gas mileage than your GTO, smaller engine and bigger fuel tank. I was getting around 270 miles before my fuel light came on until I really opened up the exhaust and now I'm getting lil over 300 at like 1/8th left of fuel. IMHO buy what's really going to make you happy and don't settle cause you'll kick yourself in the butt later on. The Marauder is going to be a lot cheapier on insurance than that GTO. You say you won't be doing any mods until its paid off but just wait until you see some in action, its like a horrible disease that you don't want to get rid of....all these parts calling your name "boost me :burnout: boost me" "4.10 gears". I dunno maybe something is wrong with me :help: or I'm not reading enough out of the summit mag when I tuck her in for the night:lol: .

haha I know. I live right by bigslim and his Trilogy Marauder, I drool every time we cruise woodward and I see that 4000+lbs car kicking camaro butt. Yeah I need WAY more space than what the GTO has to offer, but I can't imagine life without RWD and a V8. I'm sure Marauders are better in the snow too. Especially with some good snowtires on some steelies.

The Marauder engine has a 10:1 compression ratio if you run 87 without a tune for it you'll be spending many a day at the dealer having engines replaced.

I have an 03 with 29,000 miles all with 87 oct. All stock with no problems at all. I am no expert but I have read a couple of articles about octane in high performance motorcycles engines. The conclusion was that octane was not a concern due to engine management systems being so advanced. Just my opinion.

My wife's ran 87 for about 60k miles. Never hurt anything but it eventually developed a little tip-in detonation. Took it in for de-carbonizing and fixed it. Now it runs 93, just not worth the risk since it's nearing the end of warranty. Totally stock car.

Welcome Tallguy!
Fordnuts' wife also has tens of thousands of miles on 87 octane.
Not something I would do, If aggressive driving is planned.

It's very risky .... here is an answer that I posted when one of our members had engine problems and had to have his engine replaced.

"I know that your engine problems are unrelated; but maybe that $5520.01 is a good number to use that next time someone asks the question of "Is is OK to run 87 Octane in the Marauder?" Fixing the power plant on the MM ain't cheap.

The difference between 87 and 93 for me is about $0.20 per gallon. That means that I would have to drive the MM more than 550,000 miles (about 25 years for me) to save enough money to pay for the potential engine repair that might happen. This is a "No Brainer" ...... use 91 or better.
Did I do that math right??? :dunno: "

BTW -- Welcome :welcome1: to the MM.Net !!!

wow thanks guys. I guess I was just not wanting to use premium if the car was gonna be another gas hog like the Goat. It seems the marauders get pretty good gas mileage too! Better than the GTO (THANK GOD!) lol. Ok, so now I just have to find place where i can drive a marauder that doesn't think I'm just some punk tire kickin kid. I'm 23 but I look 17 (or so I've been told) Nothing less than 91 will go in my Marauder..If I get one that is.

Now this is the Third time I have seen a reference to the Marauder having a 19 gallon fuel tank, and I have asked before with no response....Did the Marauders come with 2 different size fuel tanks?.....cause mine only holds 16 gallons.

What makes you think the Marauder will get better mileage than your GTO? My Marauder gets worse mileage than my Z06. I average 15-16mpg in the Marauder, and 18-20mpg in the Z06. A GM LS1, LS2, LS6, or LS7 engine with a 6 speed manual usually results in impressive fuel economy.

If your GTO was an automatic, I would expect the same fuel economy in a Marauder. If it was a 6-speed, I would expect worse.

There was a TSB about the fuel gauge showing less fuel then was in the tank. you may have this issue.

If you get a tuner that holds more than one tune, or a multi-tune chip(flip switch) then you can have your tuner write you a 87 octane tune. They only reccomend that for driving long distances, i.e. road trips and such. If gas is an issue, then get a more economical car. Youll enjoy the Marauder and this site is by far the best resource center for it. Oh and the people are great, too:D Any question, then just ask.

Yep you guys have all been a great help. You continue to sway me away from the other cars I am looking at.

The less octane you use, the more the computer will retard the timing and you will get less mileage and less power. So ther is some cost offset in there.

I could tell a difference in octane with my 1997 and 2001 Crown Vics. Low end=valve rattling, mid grade=valve rattling occaisionally, premium (93 oct) = no rattle under any conditions. No way will I put less than premium fuel in my Marauder. The wife can tell a difference in the way her 2000 Mustang GT drives also. She has switched to nothing but premium fuel also. Performance cars are just more expensive to operate all around than "toaster" cars. More expensive fuel, shocks, tires, wheels - you get the idea. The manual and fuel gauge specifically indicate Premium Fuel Only, so that's all she is going to get. I'll drive a little less or cut back on some other luxuries if I have to in order to feed the Marauder properly. Just my humble opinion.

Locally, premium is $.20 more than regular. With a 16 gallon tank, you're talking $3.20 more when using 93 octane. I know, it's been said before, but if 3 bucks is a problem, people ought not be looking at a performance car

Welcome aboard. At least the MM that you plan on getting does not need Mobil 1 synthetic. I ran about 5 gallons of 87 octane with 3/4 of 93 with no trouble whatsoever. Keep us posted on your progress in getting your MM. If there s one that you are intersted in. PM me the VIN and I'll run it on Ford's OASIS database.
