This is no stupider than collecting 1 million for spilling your coffee in your lap or sending OJ to Florida to play golf for the rest of his life or Janet J. having a wardrobe malfunction or her brother walking free out of court or everyone who B****es about politician but doesn't vote. Or expecting that it is the job of your automobile salesman to protect your interest. We are living in the midst of proof positive that our educational system is 3 world country and declining. Will we smarten up? No sign of it yet. Dennis:soap:

Not a deficit in intelligence. This is a deficit in character. You can't teach that in school. Next in line is to blame the parents. But that doesn't explain why good people can have terrible parents and lowlife's can have wonderful parents.

These folks are merely schemers with no conscience. Maybe the IRS should take a closer look at their returns for the past 10 years or so. :P

Good point, however; everything in my education was balanced on character and personal responsibility. We kept score, we punished the cheaters and bullies and we challenged each other to do and be better. We respected our elders admired our teachers and challenged them to be better, too. We were expected to succeed and pushed and encouraged and forced to develope the character we needed at home AND at school. The teachers and administrators had respect for themselves and understood that teaching was a calling that demanded of self and they gave it in return for the prestige and respect they received from parents, administrators and students. They lived and were active in the communities where they SERVED and were honored for their commitment and selflessness. Hopefully they still are, somewhere. Dennis Oh, and failing to understand personal responsibility is as stupid as it gets. IMHO.

I would argue that one most certainly CAN teach character in school. It is the number 1 issue today with any of my students as to whether or not they can succeed. Every student problem I have had is a character issue, and that's why we as teachers spend so much time addressing character in lieu of curriculum.

It's tough to get kids to learn if we have to spend 1/3 the year just convincing them they should go to class.

The :depress: part is that we have to teach character in school, because many kids aren't getting it anywhere else.

I have had this conversation many times:

(me) "Do you get away with that* at home?"

(student) "Yep."

(me) "I'm sorry."

*"That" denotes whatever behavior is currently causing a problem, whether it be language, lack of respect, distracting others in class, or simply (and overwhelmingly most common) lack of effort.

The city should pay the lawsuit then either suspend w/o pay or fire the guy for negligence with a city vehicle.
