Got the MM back from the shop with brand new system installed:
Alpine mp3/cd head unit
iPod fullspeed
MB Quart Premium speakers front and rear
JL Audio Sub
JL Audio Amp
Dynamat all 4 doors and rear deck
Optima yellow top battery
PROS: Sound! Amazing difference from stock system. Sounds the way it should, sounds how I feel about the car, finally.
CONS: Getting used to the new iPod controls; the remote that interfaces with the existing steering wheel controls is a little funky.
I don't know if it's such a great system, or that it just puts into perspective how much was missing from the stock one, but it sounds great now, after almost 3 years of wishing it did...

10" sub, custom box takes up most of that space now in trunk to left of spare.
500W/5 channel amp. mounted flush against trunk well, right under spare tire overhang, custom box

Nice set up. I wish I didn't jump the gun and get the old Alpine iPod controller especially since I still haven't installed it yet. How quick is the iPod response? I heard the old one is pretty slow and the new one which you have is much improved.

Hey Matt,
Could you elaborate exactly where they put the amp? Because if it's mounted on the back wall of the trunk well, that's where the gas tank is. Hopefully they used really short screws, otherwise you might want to check for gas leaks.

There's enough of a delay to notice, but fast enough for me. What I don't like is having to scroll through song lists, alubms, playlists, etc., now by using the actual knob on the head unit, though. Doesn't feel as 'safe' as holding the iPod itself in your hand (of course, neither way is really 'safe' when you're driving). But the shuffle function is built into the head unit so that, if you want, you can just plug your iPod in and never touch it again. I put mine in the center console, but I know some people have put them in the trunk.

That's where they mounted it, but he knew all about where the gas tank was, etc. We discussed it. He said he could do it.
I don't smell any gas yet.

Probably couldn't hurt to put on an old T-shirt and get under the car with a flash light...I mean, it's only your fuel tank :P Enjoy the system
You did basically the same theme on the system I did/am going to.
I used an older Alpine without the ipod controls but am going to the new 6.5inch fixed screen Apline when it comes out in mid-April. It has the new iPod interface like yours.
I mounted Boston Acoustic Pro components in all 4 corners, sub on that same ledge next to the spare. It is a Boston Acoustic competition premade box with 1 10in and 1 10in passive radiator. But I had the amps mounted on a amp rack mounted between the rear seats and the spare tire/sub. Just to avoid the gas tank altogether.
I will also be adding the new navigation system from Alpine. I think its called the Blackbird.. It is portable but when you plug it into the docking station the display of navigation stuff moves from the handheld unit to the indash 6.5 screen. Since it is handheld you can take it from car to car.
