Of course I get my new mufflers on today and I come back to a leak in the rear. It was there BEFORE i left for the muffler shop so they didnt slice anything. I checked the diff housing cover and it was dry as a bone. Checked both shocks, nothing. This leaves brake lines and what else?

While you are correct I would know if it was gas, my fault for not being clear. Its some sort of oil, hard to tell what color. .... Odd I just checked and theres nothing leaking now ... two hours ago I had it parked backwards on my drive way , thats nose lower than the rear, and there was stuff leaking out in 45 minutes... Front of the diff housing?

Pinion seal? Does it stink like dead people feet? If so, its diff fluid.

HAHAHA ive never heard of "stink like dead people feet", and the mystery continues, its been another 2 hours and theres not a drop of anything under it now... weird.

Muffler bearing oil?

Seriously though. You said you went to the exhaust shop...the rubber hangers that the mufflers hang in are sometimes sprayed by the shops to be able to remove and insert the hangers into them. Your shop might have sprayed WD-40 or even soap into/onto those hangers in an effort to get the mufflers out of them.

If they used an oil based spray...stands to reason that might be your source.

be good!

(oops, sorry I didnt see you said it was there before the trip to the muffler shop...)

Kinda Vauge on what leak looked like and what the fluid smelled like.
Check your Fuel filter connections, Its only plastic clips that hold the lines on. Also check the brake lines.

New mufflers usually have small holes drilled into them to allow pooling water to drain out.

Redish / brownish , smells like oil but not especially foul.

Is the drivers side axle tube wet? I see you have 4.10 gears, if you used synth fluid it may be be heating enough to puke out the axle tube vent.

Some member here who went that route posted on that previously. Seems the synth may expand more and therefore make it out the vent tube.

Again, not personal experience but some member here posted soemthing like that previously.

Sounds like rear end lube. If you had the car parked "nose down" there might have been some leakage from the pinion seal. Rear end lube smells like natural gas...

Maybe im going crazy, maybe there wasnt a spot before i left for the shop becuase there hasnt been a drop since i poseted. Therefore its either the muffler bearing oil, which sounds posible now, or the pinion seal. Going to park nose down and lay some WHITE towel under neath and get to the bottom of this.

well that didnt take long. I checked after i parked it nose first and there it was. Its gotta be rear end oil its dripping off of where the driveshaft meets the rear diff housing but i cant see where its coming from.

If they didn't seal the nut that holds the pinion flange the oil will ooze past the threads!!:argue: If it 's not that then it's the pinion seal.

Not hard to repair and only takes a few minutes at the dealer or any shop!!:bows:

Input shaft seal. Anyone think 4.10's caused it? and i rarely if ever go above 100.

When did you install the 4.10's??

If the leak was discovered right afterwards they may not have replaced the pinion seal. All spring reinforced neoprene seals wear a groove in the surface they run on and even if they replaced the seal it may not match the wear mark of the original one.....This is a problem on harmonic balancers too!!:argue:

You may have to replace the pinion flange and seal to completely stop it?? Be sure to seal the threads too!!

I have had several "Pinion" leaks and you can smell the rear end lube burning on the exhaust pipes when you stop if it is bad enough to sling out.....Just sniff around the rear wheel wells......you'll know what it is......"Dead People's Feet" smell as stated before!!

Good Luck!!

Something may have happened to the seal if they didn't replace it when swapping out gears. Secondly, the pinion nut comes with a sealant on the threads from Ford. If they reused the nut when swapping out gears (which shouldn't be done), then the sealant probably doesn't seal as well. I suspect that since you have an appreciable amount, its the seal itself.

No, I think the install of the 4.10's caused it...
