View Full Version : Should the stock sub look like this?

I pulled the assembly out because I had the buzz and a few rattles. I removed the foam piece and still get it every now and then. So I was checking to see if there was something bouncing around. What I found seemed odd to me. Is it normal for it to have that stuff on the cone? It felt as if thats all part of the cone.

Yeah that's normal for a poly woofer. That's where the wires for the coil go throught the cone and into the coil.

Actually, that's a fairly common thing for most speaker designs, not just the poly stuff. That dome in the middle is nothing but a dust shield covering a tube like extension that protrudes down into the magnet's core and around which the speaker coils are wound. The speaker wires come up through the edge of that 'tube' and then poke through the speaker cone to go out to the terminal posts on the back of the speaker frame. The gooey glue-like texture is to keep the wires from buzzing on the surface of the cone as the cone vibrates.
One thing to note is that the coil diameter is pretty weanie for a subwoofer. What's this thing rated at, 1.5 ohms or something?
The larger the coil diameter, the less likely you are to see the coil wires on the surface of the cone (ie. they will most likely get to poke through the cone while still under the dust shield).

It's a 4 ohm woofer. Coil size has nothing to do with impedance. It's the number of winds that matters.
You don't see the tinsel lead connections on most woofers cuz the dust cone is large enough to cover them, too.
Many more modern woofers are now weaving the tinsel lead in with the spider for a more direct connection to the coil.

If someone were to frequency test the driver, its probably more of a mid bass driver than a sub woofer. Sounds ok to my old half deaf tin pan ears.
