View Full Version : Whine in drive line

Posted this before but now can't find where. My 03 300B developed a whine at about 20000. Dealer changed R&P gears and all was fine for about 5000 miles and whine came back. Next the dealer installed a complete rear axle unit from the assembly plant. This was supposed to be the latest and greatest design level with a "fix". Whine returned almost immediately. Then the dealer decided that the new axle assembly did not contain the latest design level R&P gears so a new set was installed. Car whined when I picked it up from the dealer. Don't quite know what to do now. I have picked up on a couple of notes referencing a TSB but neither the dealer or I can find one that addresses R&P gear whine. I am looking for suggestions. Thanks!

I'm not aware of any TSB for gear whine...there IS a TSB for faulty axles/bearings, but that makes more of a moaning/grinding sound.
The only thing I know of that can cause gear whine is improper setup.

Please let your children out of the trunk. That'll end the incessant whining. :)

My thoughts exaclty. Just because new gears were put in doesn't mean they were setup right. Did the dealer use the high quality OEM parts of Ford Racing parts? Not that FRPP gears are bad, but the OEM's are typically built to a higher standard for quietness.
My FRPP's do NOT whine. Some do. Apparently the OEM's are easier to setup with no whine whereas the FRPP's are more sensitive to being setup perfect.
Even then, if not setup right a whine could develop.
Hate to say it, and it'd be hard to convince them, but they may need to revisit the ring and pinion.
It could be other things too, but that's high on my list.

if you have driven the car a few miles since the ring and pinion has been done, pull the cover off and clean the gear teeth so that you can see the wear pattern. you shouls see a "shiny" pattern on the drive and coast side of the ring gear, it should be pretty easy to see if they are set up wrong, a whine is usually present if the backlash to too tight. improper pinion depth will usually cause a slight "clunk" when rocking the car forward and backward against the park pin. if the "shiny" marks are at the extreme inner or outer edges of the teeth, its set up wrong. i understand that it is hard to tell because these are set up in thousandth of an inch variances, but if its out of wack enought to cause a whine, you shold be able to see it in the wear on the ring gear.

My 4:30s didn't whine, but I just shucked three teeth off the pinion. Klunky...Klunky but no whine.

Neither do mine.
My FRPP gears whine, but everytime I bring that up the installer is blamed and it couldn't possibly be the cut....
