View Full Version : Tuner Question

OK, calling SuperChips has not given me any information, (on hold forever) and the email was even more cryptic.

Short history of the problem/question:

Jerry from FordChips dyno-tuned my car (and some others) in August of '03. I have since done exhaust, TC, and CAI. Now I need a new tune as I know I can get more out of these mods at the track.

I have a 3-position chip (3 programs) that I orginally bought from Dennis and then had custom tuned. Technically I could have the car retuned with 3 programs, daily, track, and one for 91 octane because around here 93 is not a guarantee. Of course that requires going somewhere that can reburn my chip and those places seem to be quite far away.

I could get a tuner and just make my own programs (they can store multiple programs, right?), which is how I am leaning. However, when I emailed SuperChips regarding product information and modifying tuning I got the following response:

"As of right now we have stopped doing custom programming after being
purchased by MSD. We hope to me merged with a company called HP tuners
that will give the opportunity once again to custom tune vehicles VIA a
laptop based software. Check back with us near the end of the year for
updates on that."

Now I'm confused, so I'm glad I have a great board to turn to.

I could easily just keep the chip and get it tuned, or I could buy a tuner and figure it out. The former is definitely easier. The latter probably better in the long run.

Which tuner should I be looking at if I want to do multiple programs and really be able to mess with everything?

Is there a vendor on site that specializes in this area and is not 12 hours away?

If not, my dad is moving to Sebring, FL this summer so I might have to make an "excuse" to drive down there and see Dennis on my way.

Thanks!

You called Superchips, not Superchips Custom Tuning.
And the chip you have from 03 is a Diablo based chip that wont support SCT Files.

Jason, I am trying to work on your file but you have it in .xtr format.
I have to figure out how to open it.

xtr's will open in SCT Xtreme Tune Software. You may want to ask Dennis if he can do custom tunes by either remoting into a laptop>tuner>car setup and diagnose via data logging software or just sending him a captured datalog file.

also, superchips does have a dealer locator (http://superchips.idealerquik.com/custinfo.asp). I don't know if that applies to SCT though

Thanks -

Doh! Stupid two companies having the same name or websites or something!

So - do you recommend reburning the chip or should I get a tuner?

I would go with the tuner for down the road. Just in case you want to start tweaking with the Pro Racer software.

^^^what jwheeler said^^^

Even if you don't opt for the Pro Racer Package, having the tuner makes programme changes as simple as having a file e-mailed to you and loading it in...no more sending the chip back, waiting weeks for it to be re-burnt, then putting it back in only to realise sumthin' ain't right...
