View Full Version : Met an SRT-8 Charger on the road...

Well, it was a chance encounter for sure, but definitely an interesting one. A stock Trilogy meets up with a new SRT-8 Charger on a 4 lane highway. Results? Somewhat inconclusive, but definitely intersting!

I was driving down the road, basically a highway bypass, nice and open, nice and straight, low traffic amount.

In my rear view I spotted a black Charger, and saw it had a scoop. It was a ways back, so I let off and coasted to 5 under the limit to let him catch up.

He cruised by, checkin' out my Marauder as he went. I slowly got back up to speed, keeping behind him but with him.

By that time it was on! I saw the tell-tale signs from the tailpipes that the throttle was being hammered, and the SRT-8 began to get smaller.

I had my O/D off and hopped on it. Very quickly the SRT-8 was no longer getting smaller. Soon, it was getting gradually bigger.

It didn't last long, we both let up. Came up beside him and was greeting with a big smile and a "thumbs up." Returned the gesture, commenting "Sweet ride!"

I then hit it again, letting him hear the sweet sounds of the Eaton blower. Let off, and he coasted by, and he returned that "hello" with some quite nice tailpipe music for a stock system as he again opened up the 6.1l Hemi on the Charger.

I was on it again, with the same results as earlier.

I realized where he was going, and we turned off together, hitting the local cruise in.

I stopped to chat with him, a super nice guy. He told me when he came up past me he wasn't expecting me to be able to keep up. He said he was totally surprised when I came up on his rear and wanted to know what I had under the hood.

I told him thanks, and that his car was looking sweet. (The Charget SRT-8 looks pretty nice in person in my opinion, wasn't a big fan of the front on the Chargers but the SRT-8 looks best of them.)

So we go and open my hood. Next thing I know, there is my Marauder which needed a bath (had pollen on it) across from a brand new SRT-8 Charger, with a small crowd checking out the Trilogy.

I exchanged departing greetings, and told the Charger I hope to see him around again. I must say, he has a cool car - and I think he felt the same way about the Marauder. Always nice to see people sharing the fun of the car hobby even with different rides.

I was however, thrilled when my stock-tune Trilogy (3.4 pulley, 4.10gears) surprised an SRT-8 Charger.

The results though, are somewaht inconclusive. I don't know how hard we were on it, and it was only a few quick bursts. I'd love to see if I can meet up with him on a drag-strip. With 245 series tires in the rear on both cars, we'll have to get some drag radials, but would be cool to see that matchup!

Very good story!

After you two had pulled over you should have gotten out of your car saying "I'm stuck in first"

LOL.....he probably would have died right there on the spot.

I could be a real stickler here actually. Based on the speed we were going when we "hit it" my car did not downshift to a lower gear. Had I "hit it" harder I might have coaxed it too, but at that speed it would've been quite close to redline. That downshift may have propelled me forward with a bit more gusto at first.

I'm not saying the results would have been different, just that it's more reason to meet on the 1320 for some factual results. :)

WTG!

Mike, Nice 'test' run with that SRT-8!!!

Way to represent the MM faith!

That supports what I said in my post of driving a SRT-8 Charger. I felt like my car could beat one. Way to represent.

I'd say hp/weight ratio is very similar, and both cars are on 245 width rears. The SRT-8 does have 20" rims and big brembos which may add weight to wheel rotating mass.

I agree - it's very close. :D

I think a Trilogy Marauder would be right next to a 300c SRT8 as well. If not a little quicker. If you compare spec #'s, they are very comprable.

I will predict that on the 1320, the results will be very similar to an Impala SS.
Hemi engines are 2 valves per cylinder.
Good for Low End Torque but suck at High RPM Horsepower.
