Can anyone explain to me why we say the gauges in our stock MM's are not real and why we should upgrade to the other Autometer ones?

Thanks

ThanksCost cutting at Ford for the first ? and a more accurate reading on the second ? Actually the Oil Pressure is not "real" It is more or less a high falutin version of an idiot light. The volt meter is real. Do a search on gauges and enjoy the reading.

Thanks, I will take a look around. Gotta do more research on the axle thing too. My 03 is about to be out of warranty w/ 23000 miles...

dhawke, as STLR FN said, only the oil pressure gauge is a fake. It uses a switch (rather than a sender) that closes at approx. 6 lbs of oil pressure, causing the specially-ballasted dummy "gauge" to give the same reading at all times. One of the reasons Ford did this was to reduce the number of complaints of "low/erratic oil pressure" the dealers had to handle under warranty. They made the gauge always indicate a perfect reading so they didn't have to keep explaining over and over that it's NORMAL for the oil pressure to fluctuate based on engine temperature and RPM (Ford vehicles haven't had working oil pressure gauges since at least 1989, if not earlier).

Fortunately, Ford chose to create this bastardised gauge from a commonly available line, so getting one that actually WORKS is easy. AutoMeter p/n 4327 gets you a new sender and gauge unit that matches the OEM for about $55 from Jeg's, Summit, or your favourite local speed shop. Conversion is easy; there's a nice write-up with pics (courtesy of Wes from Innovative Interceptors) somewhere on here...

Thanks guys, I did look at all the write ups last night. What a joke... I will support one of the vendors though. I also need to get my gears and one of the programmers.

Which one do you guys like the best? So many choices, superchip 2 etc... :stupid:

Actually, when it comes to a tuner that a vendor sells - there isn't a choice  I'm balls-out Diablosport until proven otherwise.
