Morning All,
I'd like to get your recommendations on the PROPER way to break in my new Marauder.
I currently have 328 miles on it and I need to know when to drain the break in oil etc. and how best to drive it to break in in correctly.
I know how I want to drive it:banana2:but that might not be the best way.
I've gotten good information from you all in my past questions and your help with this one would be appreciated as well.
All the dealer said was drive it as normal. Yea right.
Anyway I wait and watch for your replies and I thank you.
Everyone have a great day.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike: your dealer wasn't far off...other than avoiding WOT and panic stops as much as possible for the first 500-1000 miles, just drive the car normally . Don't cruise at one speed for long distances; vary your speed on the highway, as much as is safe. Don't tow an Airstream through the Rockies until you've got at least a grand on it... :D
Cars today don't come with "break-in" oil as such; some of us elected to change the factory oil earlier than specified (I did it at 1000 miles), just to get rid of any casting sand, flash, or other contaminants that may have found their way in, but even that's probably unnecessary.
Someone (perhaps here) once said: "Drive it like you stole it." That's not far from the way I broke in my two previous cars, the first one went 221,000 miles before I sold it, and the other (currently for sale) has 152,000...neither burned any oil between changes, nor had any unusual mechanical problems. Just use a little common sense and you'll be fine...
Capt.,
In my opinion...
There is no "break-in" oil in the car. I did my first oil change @ 2500 (see thread "Oil" for what everyone is using)
I've always been told...
1) Don't drive long distances at constant speeds (i.e. cruise control)
2) Vary your speeds and have a "little fun" with her to get her seated properly (a couple/few of WOT won't hurt her)
and...
3) I'll wait for someone to post "drive it like you stole it" :)
Also...now is the time to listen to her carefully for any strange noises, squeaks, etc.

^^^ What my esteemed colleagues said ^^^
The first thousand miles is important IMHO. Varying engine rpm and speed helps the piston rings seat and wear into the cylinder. Some now say that is baloney too, but I am old school and believe in a 'break in' period. A few short bursts of WOT after a few hundred miles should not hurt a thing.
I changed oil & filter at 3000 and will stay on that schedule. Others do it earlier. It doesn't hurt a thing and the oil companys love the revenue. This car uses a synthetic oil. Stay with a known good brand and filter, keep a regular change interval and enjoy your ride !

I varried speeds with no WOT runs, but I mixed it up a little (from idle up to 3500) for the first 1000 miles. I changed the oil then over to Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5W30. From there I continued to stay out of her until about 2000 miles, then I went street racing with that El Camino. Before we raced I got used to the WOT 2nd gear scratch and launching. So yah... there ya go.

How would I suck them into my air filter when they're so far behind me? :D

I go by Drive it like a rental but yes the first 1000 that I put on mine was only 3 WOT only and that was at Norwalk.

Our MM's motor isn't much different fron my old '99 Cobra. If you listen to the Mustang boys, they'll tell you, "Drive it like you stole it!" Worked then and works now. 'Course, I got almost 19000 on the MM as of this morning on the way to work.

I agree with Wolfe - IMHO the first oil change at 1,000 milse is importent. Then at 3,000 mile intervals or every 3 month which ever occurs first. I nothing else oil changes are the most critical for the life of the engine. John:)

Sorry for my ignorance guys, picking up my MM tomorrow and I'd like to know what WOT is, and how do I determine if it is a 300A or a 300B?
Thanks....

WOT = wide open throttle
300A will be black, no traction control or heated seats. Will have full size spare.
300B will be Black, Silver or Blue will have traction control, most have clocks in radio not standalone. Small spare tire. No fuel release door button.
I am probably missing something. Do a search on here. Lots of info to be read and digested. Come back often.......and congrats on your new ride. :D

wait a minute, WE WERENT SUPPOSED TO DRIVE AT WOT for the first 1000 miles. OH man......... Thats all I did, every time i accerlerated it was WOT! ok maybe not everytime, but lots of time. Maybe that will explain the little ticking coming from the engine:sad:
Men, 135 mi on this piece of jewelry, I can'y keep my foot out of it!!
Now that I know WOT is, I have been refraining from that, but it's beggin for it!!
