I have gotten it out of the bracket, but the clips that hold the lines at each end look a little tricky. After doing a search it seems a lot of people have broken these while trying to swap the filter. What is the proper way to remove them without breaking them?

I don't remember how I did it, IIRC there was a small clip that slid in and relieved some pressure on the mounting tabs. Just be careful when you disconnect because for about 1 or 2 seconds theres nothing then it just wizzes out of there while you're thinking "Hey, no fuel, get closer" :)

There is a tool that slips inside of the line and pushes the clips back far enough to slip out the filter.
The filter should come with new clips in case you break the old ones.

The tool is only a couple of bucks, most FLAPS have them.

It's actually pretty simple. Although using the tool MENINBLK referenced is the best and quickest way, you don't *need* it. Just use a small flat-blade screwdriver under the "fingernail" part of clip. If you're careful, they'll pop out without breaking, though I always ensure I have new ones on hand just in case. *NOTE* some aftermarket filters do not come with new clips, and Ford wants something like $7...each...

I bought the motorcraft filter and it did not come with the new clips. So the tool is used to pop out that white/beige piece? Thats what I figured was locking it in but I didnt want to force anything. I have a doctors apointment so I'll post some pics and fiddle with it when I get back. Thanks

Just replaced mine a couple of weeks ago. It was easy!
I drove to the dealer, they put it up on the lift, I paid the bill. EASY!

I broke my tabs pulling them out and the ones that the filter came with were to big!
I had to use my wire wheel with make them fit.

But Rich, you missed the enjoyment of potentially splashing premium in your eyes!!!

And the definite possibility of smelling like gas for a few days...

I got my fuel filter tool from NAPA. Just open it up to get the tool around the fuel line, push it up into the fuel line connector and it'll come right off.

Before you take the filter off you'll want to relieve the fuel pressure though. Take the cover off the schrader valve (looks like the inside of your tire stem) on the front of the driver's side fuel rail, lay down a rag to catch the squirt of fuel your going to get, and take a small screwdriver and depress the schrader valve to bleed of the pressure.

I can't believe the quick lube places want over $50 to do this.

FLAPS = Friendly Local Auto Parts Store. While there you may want to upgrade to the larger filter.

Well today I did the change, my friend had the tool. I was a little nervous, I really did not want to break the pieces of plastic by using the tool wrong. I could see that happening to me. Anyways he got under and told me that these clips are easy and don't even need the tool. He slid them both off in a matter of seconds. So I guess the tool is not needed afterall, anyways the swap went fast, only a few minutes.

Way to go, dude! Now that you know how easy it is, be sure to change it every 25-30,000 miles MAX.
