View Full Version : ProRauder test fit. Success!

Just had to take a break and post the picture of us test fitting those huge tires on the narrowed frame.

S U C C E S S!

http://john.frieltek.com/toomanyfords/marauder/tubbed/img/testfit.jpg

We're saving the jigs for the frame machine and have everything documented for the next Marauder to be done. We'll be making a kit out of this if you want to "do it yourself" but I highly recommend sending it to us. That would be the time to have us install the headers, swap valve covers, install a blower, you name it!

Tomorrow the body gets mated back to the frame and then we put everything back together.

As soon as I have a spare minute and can get some of the hundreds of photos together I'll get my web site updated. I've also got about 2 hours of video taped too and will be assembling a DVD.

So, what do y'all think?

Bad Ass or just plain PUREVIL!

That thing is just going to be amazing to see from behind.

Will you be driving this on the road at all or just a drag car after it's finished?

How much room do you have between the frame and tire? it looks kinda tight.

John,

Simply out of this world !! :bows:

So, if i can understand correctly, these body on frame do deserve their name ==> One can unplug wires and hoses here and there, undo the frame to body bolts and lift the whole body as a unit ? How much time does it take ?

Thanks and congrats

I think there was a tear in my eye after taking that picture. No, really is was more like sporting wood but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

:P

Purevil will be a driver, not a trailer queen or just a drag car. If it was the latter I'd have to go get another 'rauder so I wouldn't go into withdrawl.

There is an inch of space between the back of the tire and the frame. Plenty of room. We tested full travel by lifting just one tire all the way up and letting the other side droop to make sure axle articlulation was above factory specs. In this version we chopped the existing watts link bars and then boxed them as they are now each 5.5" shorter than before. Even the factory air leveler bolts right back up.

If anyone has questions, just ask away. This is old school hot rodding at its best.

Cheers!

Thanks! Being this was the first time any of us had actually disassembled a Marauder before, it took us about 7 hours to take everything apart to the point we could lift the body off. I'm sure we could do the next one in half that time. Man, there were a -lot- of hidden bolts and procedures we learned that if you do them in a certain order, it would have gone faster.

Then it took us about an hour with a skil saw to custom make the 4x4 blocks to lift the body off. Then we just lifted and looked for the connections we missed the night before. We found 5 and they were all easy to disconnect and off it came.

Tomorrow it will all get coated with POR-15 to seal everything and it will look shiny new.

Cheers!

Just a few comments, for safety. You are going with a 31 spline axle and you will get a hardened rear end cover right? If you are going to run tires of that large of a diameter, I think you'll rip the stock 28 spline to shreds in no time. Good luck with the build though. It looks great so far. I'd ditch the 8.8 for a 9 inch too but that's just me.

Nice work.

The picture above was taken while it was mounted to a Frame Machine. Basically this is just a big, really big, rectangle of very heavy steel on wheels. The middle section of my frame is then bolted solid to this to prevent any movement or warpage. The rear of my frame was then welded with angle steel in a criss-cross pattern to four points to the frame machine so it too would not move when the section above the axle was cut out. I've got that process video taped so everyone can see it happen. I've got just about enough to fill a 2 hour DVD now.

Cheers!

Are the upper links gone forever? It looks like there are two trailing links welded to a forward pivot point. The Watts links are the only other locators for the axle. It will be interesting to see how you tune the suspension for torque/wind-up damping and anti-roll stabilization...

Of course, more pictures are needed immediately for us to form a better opinion of the overall looks ;>)

Yes, the old control arms are now just an eBay Marauder Axle Repair Kit. (LOL!)

The axle is controlled by these:

Post more pics NOW!

Tonight I should have the rest of the outside body panels back on. That and we'll get the drivers side tires mounted. Man! It's like a big jigsaw puzzle bolting everything back together when I didn't see it come apart. I have one electrical plug that goes over the heater fan assembly and terminates somewhere above the transmission but I can't find the mating plug. . .

I got the battery back in and the lights etc work, so we'll also be inflating the rear air bags and playing with ride-height. I really like where the rear is sitting right now, but the front is 1.75" higher than the back. I wonder if the QA1 front coil-overs can lower it that much.

More pictures soon.

Thanks for the compliments Marty, and everyone else too!

The QA-1s should do the trick. Make sure you have the spanner wrench to set up the ride hight. and just be sure to check for clearance of the tires on the fender wells as you do this.

I never wanted to travel to Iowa until now!
