View Full Version : Thinking about a racing seat.

While in my favorite speed shop today, I inquired about racing seats and the Marauder. They said it would be very doable for the MM, the only thing I would have to do is pick out a seat and a harness. Right now I am leaning toward the Sparco Torino 2 with a 4 point harness. Even if I do not do alot of racing, I think the safety element would be well worth it. I did have a concern about the side airbag and the leagality of removing it, but the techs said since it was an "optional" airbag, they could legally remove the seat. Please chime in with your thoughts/concerns. Thanks, Bob.

I'm pretty sure the side airbags were standard, not an option.

If you are still undecided in August, take a seat in Trilogy1.

Those Corbeaus Jerry had installed are quite comfy.:)

Chuck, I think I used the wrong word when I said "optional" I think what the shop meant is they are not required by the DOT to meet the minimum safety standards, and thus may be removed and still keep the car legal.

I've got Corbeau's in my Mustang. CR1's. The first 2 weeks of owning them I walked funny from them being so snug.(I'm 6'0" 270lbs) However after having them a few years they fit me like a glove. If I would of gotten the wider versions I wouldn't of had to deal with that first "break in" I can drive 300+ miles and Its very nice. One thing I can't stand about these MM's is any kind of aggressive driving you're all over the place in the car. I feel even worse for my wife because at least I've got a steering wheel to hold onto.

Harness wise I have Corbeau's Harness's that are the "y" style and are bolted into the back where the rear seat belts used to be.

Tallboy - I'm pretty sure the side airbags were standard, not an option.
Can't speak to the Marauder particulars, however, for the Crown Victoria ( 2003 in my case ) the side airbags were an option ( paid extra and everything for 'em ).

Given FoMoCo's interest in platform consistency, I would STRONGLY suspect that they were an option for the Marauder as well.

*Do know that most ( if not all ) of the eBayŽ Marauder used front seat offerings that I've tracked over the years did NOT have side airbags.

*OK ... Just checked the sales brochure ... side airbags were an option.

As an add-on to Cheeseheadbob's post .....

Are there any ramifications of installing non side airbag seats when the car came with 'em ?

*i.e. will doing this throw a code ? And if it does ... How do you circumvent / eliminate it ?

Great question. I would like to know the answer as well.

I've been thinking about racing seats too because of the safety factor and the last vehicle I had which was rear-eneded by a drunk driver on 95 NB going almost 100mph or more while I was only doing 60-62mph and my seat folded and twisted like a french with a gun to his head. I think once I get my settlement check I will do some research into getting the OEM seats re-foamed with an increased kidney and hip/thigh huggers. I like the OEM seats too much to have them pulled out but I would also add in a 4 or 5 pt harness. In MD vehicles 1995 and up are req. to have a driver's and passenger front airbag, the side impact airbags can be removed as they are only an opitonal safety add-on just like side curtain air-bags. While your at it why not add in a 6pt roll-cage and tub it out :D  .

You Will Need To Reprogram The Car To Ignore The Missing Airbag.

Barauder, Welcome. Click on forums, click on the Lounge and repost starting your own thread and we will jump in and explain we can't type or spell either. There is a comfort zone here similar to racing seats which is what this thread is about. The water is fine and if all else fails there is always Mavis Bacon. Dennis:beer:

FYI. There are also weight sensors in the seats for the main air bags. :)

Maybe an option on the Crown Vic, but, they are standard equipment on the Marauder.

The seats not only have an air bag, they also have occupancy classification sensor in the seat bottom. It checks the weight classification of the driver and front passenger to determine which "stage" of severity to deploy the air bag. Removing the seats will completely disable the air bag system. You can't get around it.

Side impact air bags were not optional on Marauder, they were on the CV and GM.

Sinch up the seat belt, move the seat forward a little and get a dead pedal.

I vote against removing the big comfy sofa seat. It is part of what makes the Marauder - a Marauder.

You would not believe the fun I have been having at the EVOC instructor course lately. Remind me to show you a little trick on staying in your seat at the next meet.

My bad / mis'. Thanks for the correction.

Isn't there a way to transfer the weight sensors to which ever racing seat you choose? Or even a way to trick the computer into thinking it's getting a signal from those sensors? I can't believe this hasn't been done to a daily driver before, and I for one would really like to have some racing seats in my car, as long as they recline a little and I can move them forward and backward.

I would like to know more about the "Corbeau" seats that were mentioned? Where can I learn more?

That nice looking black one in the middle? I'd never get back out of the damned thing.

When I couldn't get back out of the Ford GT, and claimed they'd have to let me keep it, two hefty guys from the dealership "helped"; although they had to re-install the steering wheel, later.
