View Full Version : My New COPs

Haven't had a chance to try them out yet. They're from WeaponX Motorsport. I tried out the Granatelli ones and they don't fit under the coil covers unless a spacer is added. These fit, have higher output than the OEM ones, and are designed better. The coils connect directly to the plugs, no wires, no springy thingies, no ferrite beads. The noise suppression is on the primary side so resistor plugs are not necessary, hence they have non-resistor racing plugs to go in with them. They have waterproof seals so water won't get past them and cause corrosion around the plug. Once my tranny is back in I'm going to do before/after dyno tests and will post data then.

Can't wait for this review, they look real compact, like it's just the boot.

Not plugs and wires... Plugs, wires, coils. Ask Rider90 how much the OEM coils cost.
Edit: Correction, it's just plugs and coils since these coils connect directly to the plugs instead of using wires like the OEM or Granatelli COPs.

1. I'll find out if they increase power or prevent spark blowout.
2. The OEM ones will eventually fail. My work vehicle started to eat them one-by-one at around 100k. I have over 80k on my MM. These are about $150 cheaper than OEM replacements and might provide some performance improvements.

Ask Rider90 how much the OEM coils cost.
Cost me $70.00/ea at the Local L/M Dealer..
$70x8 = $560 for OEM coils

The original cost on the full Granatelli COP upgrade was astronomical, and not a smooth install.
Keep us post 'Nut, and thanks!

Brian,
Almost 1 year since you posted this. Any review on these COPs? I'm looking for something within the next few months and these look easier for a novice DIYer to install.

Replacement ones are about $28 ea around here... and you usually only have to replace one or two a year after 100000 miles... knock yourself out...

Dyno testing showed no gain. They worked fine but the manufacturer is working on another type which I am trading mine in on. The ones I had before were designed for optimum performance with non-resistor plugs. I didn't want to swap from resistor to non-resistor plugs just in case I had a COP go out and had to get an OEM replacement in an emergency. The new type is designed for optimum performance with resistor type plugs.

wells replacements at autozone are almost $150 EACH!
only other vehicle in the database that shares the P/N is the GT.
will the much more common mustang/cobra/mach 1 COPs fit?

I've had to replace two COPs on mine and O'Reilly's has them for $39. Make sure you specify an 04 Marauder cause the computer spits out the SOHC COP for an 03 Marauder.

My company F150 with 170,000 miles is now eating COPs at the rate of 2 per month!
My company won't authorize getting all of them done because they cost SO much $$$. They trade in all trucks before 200,000 miles.
I just got my truck back today from COP replacement #3 out of 8. (whoopee!!! 5 to go!)
I can't wait to get rid of this POS 5.4 Triton! What a miserable underpowered, gas guzzling pile of crap!
No wonder Ford puts a blower on these 5.4s! THEY ARE GUTLESS!
A well built 6.0 liter pushrod engine would be so much better, especially once you get a lot of miles on it.
Hopefully the newer 3 valve 5.4s have some cojones.
Now, back to the new COPs that FordNut is using:
Brian, Let us know when you recieve the 'new style' COPs...I'm interested in these as a possible upgrade.

I tried out the Granatelli ones and they don't fit under the coil covers unless a spacer is added.
I installed a set of Granatelli wires on my Marauder with no problems.
If the wires aren't fully seated into the coil, I can see this happening.

That's because you replaced the WIRES not the coils. They are also supposed to be working on a re-design which fits under the coil covers with no spacer. Their older version also required polarity change in the wiring harness at the COP connectors. That is supposed to be fixed in the new version also.

what year is the F150?
I have a 2006 E250 with 5.4L, they aren't 3V in the Vans, and it has plenty of get up and go.

2002 with the lo-po 2 valve 5.4.:(
It doesn't have much torque plus it won't rev past 5,000 rpm.
Why design a relatively small CID SOHC V8 for low-end torque like Ford decided to do???
Anyone remember the lame BMW 'Eta' engines...same mistake!
IMHO, the only thing that you should design for low end torque is a bigger cube pushrod V8.
What a pleasure it is to drive my 6,200 rpm DOHC Marauder! It begs for MORE rpm!
After a week of lumping around in that 5.4, I need a good dose of Marauder!
