Jay called me with a problem with his MM. He's out on I-80 in the middle of no-where but he has cell service, so he called me to recruit some assistance.

Short story: He discovered his MM all of a sudden won't shift out of park. I told him about the brake fuse issue and he verified he has no brake lights either. He changed the brake light bulbs and the fuses (#19 & #22) which were ok, but he changed them anyway. Emergency brake won't automatically disengage either. Turn signals are ok.

He's able to fight the shifter into neutral and start the car, but he's without brake lights and a warm and fuzzy about being able to shift the car.

Anybody out there got the big red book or a fix to help Jay troubleshoot is problem?

Thanks in advance!

Have him try the associated test, otherwise he needs to check the linkage, we've had a few member here with linkage issues.

.

good luck

Marc

Well, we made it home and got the MM in the garage. Things that aren't working:
Transmission lock won't unlock in PARK when the engine is running; however, there is a work around for this that works (just tried this when I got home).
The work around is:

Turn the key one position before the power-on position
Push in the shifter lock and move shifter to neutral
The MM will now start.
No brake lights. All other lights work.
Replaced rear light bulbs (left and right)...didn't fix the problem
Replaced fuses #19 and #22...didn't fix the problem
Cruise Control would not disengage when brake pedal was pressed. Had to physically turn the cruise control off to disengage.
Emergency brake is actually not an issue. Emergency brake does lock when MM is in PARK, and WILL NOT lock in place when MM is in gear.Hopefully, somebody might have a suggestion on the site.

I guess it will be a trip to the local friendly neighborhood L/M dealer on Monday. Just turned 42700 on the speedo.

Jay

P.S. JD, thanks for the assist with discussing options over the phone and for starting this thread, I hope it's an easy fix.

sounds like the brake pedal switch went south, see above troubleshooting..

Sounds like the switch on the brake pedal to me too. Look for a broken wire or loose connection.

Sounds to be the BOO (Brake On/OFF) switch or its wiring/connectors. These tend to fail on older/high-mileage police CVs, so yours may just be a connection issue.

I vote for the BOO switch, too...

Checked under the dash for loose wires,...nope not the problem. That under the dash access panel (under the steering wheel) is a real bear to get out, being in an awkward position doesn't help either. Off to the dealer this week, I'll pass on what the problem is when I hear anything.

To all, thanks for the advice within this thread. Jay

Turn on the hazard (Four-way) flashers and depress the brake pedal. If they stop, the brake light switch is working. If that is the case, you may have an issue with the multi-function switch (Almost certainly!)or the lighting control module. You can pass that info on to the repair center if the problem becomes intermittant. Don't let it go if they start working, you'll never know when they aren't!

Best luck,

J

Negative! Just tried mine and same thing - hazards don't stop with brake application. Must be different on the newer panthers. Did you check the brake lights after messing with the hazard switch?

Sorry for the mis-information!

Well, the L/M dealer found the problem and fixed things this morning. Some how the connector for the power wire coming out of the back of the fuse box that leads to the Brake ON/OFF (BOO) switch broke. They installed a new AUGOT terminal connector and everything works fine. $6.00 part/$253.80 labor, but under the extended warrenty that I have,....it was FREE....NO CHARGE

Sweet! So let me get this straight, your BOO switch had a boo-boo? (groan). :D
