View Full Version : Throttle cable sticking

I know, I know, it seems like all my threads are a re-hash of old news, but again, I couldn't find much in a search to help me. Ok, if you all remember FourthHorseman's post about a sticking throttle, as a result of a kink in the throttle cable. I have been having the same problem; the cable is jumping off the bellcrank on the throttle body and getting stuck on the linkage, holding the throttle partially open. My individual problem is slightly different though, in that I can't see any kink or bend in the cable. Instead, it seems like it is really loose, as if there is virtually no tension on it, whether at idle or WOT. Any thoughts? Is there a tension adjustment anywhere? Could it have gotten stretched somehow, and if so, how much of a job is it to replace it? (my car is out of it's 3yr/36k warranty, and I don't know if it would be covered on my extended powertrain warranty). Again, sorry to beat yet another dead horse, but I would appreciate any advice. Thanks guys!

On the lower side of the throttle body you'll see a return spring. Is it saggy, loose, kinked?

Nope, all my springs are solid, and I have the new Accufab TB with the new throttle spring and bellcrank as well. Like I said, with the throttle closed, the cable just seems like it's really loose. When I put the TB on a few weeks ago, I didn't notice this, so I'm a little concerned that it seems to have just happened. I wouldn't think it was possible to stretch the cable, so I'm hoping maybe there is an adjustment somewhere....maybe? I dunno, I'm kinda lost....

Get under the hood and flip open the throttle body blade a few times as if you were the accelerator pedal. Bring it wide open, close it, just play. It's fuel injected and you won't hurt a thing by doing so (unlike a carb'd engine)

If that doesn't cause a stick then get under the seat and play with the pedal and try to trace the problem.

My throttle cable feels pretty relaxed too.

Oh, I know, I've been playing. (And I've flooded out my fair share of carbureated motors :o) It seems like it jumps a little when I release it from WOT, but that's it. I felt the cable on my buddy's dad's Marauder and it seems pretty loose too, about like mine, so maybe it's just my imagination. And it hasn't done it since, btw. Curious though.... maybe I'm just crazy. We'll see what the coming week brings I guess. Thanks.

Was there suppose to be a new throttle spring with the Accufab TB ?
If so, mine didn't come with one, I used the old spring.:dunno:
Anyone else in the same boat as me ?

Yes, mine came with everything, with exception to the TPS. It just bolted right in. It hasn't done it since btw. Must just have been a fluke.

You know, one of these days, a dealership or shop will say that a 2006 Panther's throttle cable is sticking, and then someone will say, "but the 2006s don't have throttle cables" :P

I'm curious if the new spring has a stonger tension than the stock one.

I need to know why my Accufab TB didn't come with a new spring...... "Todd, where are you":dunno:

Yes, I think the Accufab TB has a stiffer spring than stock. I personally like it that way. Feels a little more like a carbureated car, which I have always preferred.
