I'm in the market for rear tires. I've been running 255/55/18 KDW2 tires for 24k miles on the rear and it's time for a change. I want something with more grip and this Cooper tires seems to have a "DRY" grip rating set just as high as their nicest performance tire. That either means this is a high-performer, or Cooper doesn't know what good traction is. Does anyone have experience with this tire?

It looks like quite the SUV tire, I agree, but if it will hold better in the turns than these KDW2s I'm sold.

For what it's worth...I don't like the fact that these tires don't come in any size that will fit the front. Personally, I don't mix and match because of performance and looks.

Cooper's ratings won't stack up to true user ratings or an independant rating. You don't know what their scale is, it's easy to sway numbers.

Just something to keep in mind, it's hard to say if they will have more grip than the KDW2's.

From past experience, I would highly recommend you leave any Cooper tire on the dealers rack. Coopers are poopers. I told ya.

I'm using a Nitto SUV tire inthe rear. I believe the extra sidewall stiffness of an SUV tire has been beneficial on our heavy car.

Jason,
Take a real close look at the Nitto 420S. The tread design is radical and the grip is exceptional. They come in 255/55/18.

I really like 'em a lot.

I'd buy a Nitto over being given a Cooper any day.

I never saw these options browsing Tire Rack all day. As of now that will be the tire...

It says Traction A, so does their Nitto 555R & 555RI...must be one hell of a tire eh?

Thanks Rich!

My humble opinion is that the 555 is too soft for the rear. MarauderMarc has 555's all around and likes 'em. With your handling mods, I think the 420S in the rear would serve you better (as it has me) with the stiffer SUV style sidewall. Plus, that tread pattern is the ****nit. I have the 555 in the front. They have a lot less understeer than stock even with the slightly higher rake of my set up.

Last, but not least, the 420s gives me good confidence in the rain.

OLD THREAD ALERT

Just a follow up, Its been nothing but rain here in NY since I installed the Nitto NT 420S on my rear and the traction is amazing, even the handling is beyond what I thought they would be for a SUV tire.
Im hoping that when the weather breaks, I can launch off the convertor and hook up.

i have Pirelli Asymetrico 255/55's on the back of my car..i really love these tires. they are sticky on the dry, and work great in the rain. my old KDWS rears wouldnt let the back end stay under the car on any damp surface..
