View Full Version : *Custom Hood Poll*

As you all know nobody makes an aftermarket hood for the Marauder/Marquis/Vic, but Doug from Champion Fiberglass Products has shown interest in such a project if we can decide on "one" style of hood from the designs he already makes for other cars.
We need to choose from one of his exsisting hood designs to keep cost down, estimated cost is in the mid to high 300 dollar range.
http://www.championfiberglassproducts .com/
Doug stated in another post "If I had a commitment for 40 hoods I would eat the cost of the mold."
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=25482&highlight=hood
So I am starting this poll to get an idea of who is interested and which style is most popular. This is the first poll which will be opening for 60 days, so other polls will most likely follow to narrow down the choices.
Dual scoop Ram Air = Mach 1, Super Mach, Mach III, Stallion.
These images are for illustration purposes only, meaning no hoods actually exist.
If a hood were to be put into production the size, shape, and style may/will differ from the illustrations provided below.
These images are to give you a general idea of what the hood might look like.

Small. Maybe a Cougar Eliminator style from a 69-70.
I have a Boss 429 style scoop for my Mustang. Maybe I should remove the studs and see how it looks. I think it'll be too tall.

I think the Cobra R Raised Cowl would look good given the soft lines of the MM and Vic. Its a more subtle look and doesn't scream "HOOD SCOOP" like you can buy on JC Whitney or some ricer shop.
So when does the production start??? :D

I'm also very interested. The big questions, beyond styling issues, are:
How much lighter than the steel hood would the fiberglass hoods really be?
How will the hardware mounting be supported on the fiberglass?
Will the fiberglass hood require structural support ?
(Our hoods are large and fiberglass will flex).
Style is very important, but the above is also much needed 411. These additional concerns are precisely what has kept other vendors away.

IMHO Mike addresses some very good points.
With those issues met, I'd like to have one with just the stock appearance and be glad that I was able to knock some weight off of the front of the car.:)

weight is not an issue for me as much as the hood fitting like the stock one with the right gapping and so on.

I would like the cobra raised cowl hood without the dumb vent thing in the center, that does not fit our car.
For that price range, I could be interested in one of the two "ram Air" type hoods, IF it were functional and not just cosmetic. Am I correct that these don't really have any "ram air" aspects to them but are only for looks? BTW, they DO look good, I just wouldn't spend the money for the bling factor alone.

I like the look of the dual scoops but now wonder if the hood is fiberglass and the scoops are not opened at highway speeds would it effect the hood maybe causing cracking or falling apart which would make the hood pretty much only for show and also would it cause some kind of wind resistance? Also if it was open scoops would the effect be the same only quicker or would the hood belly?
This maybe why i have been to change my mind for the cobra raised cowl.Sorry if this sounds not right but it was roaming through my head and i thought i should ask.:cool4:
Wow thank you all for that great answer:up::rolleyes:

I thought all but the stock one looked out of place.
Wasn't hood clearance a big part of the reason the 5.4 doesn't fit under the hood? If that's the case, maybe a hood that would allow that engine swap to happen.

I'm waiting to vote until I find out whether these are strictly nice looking hoods, or whether there could be some sort of true forced air setup with some of them. For the price, I suspect that they will only be cosmetic.

I was in contact with Doug (www.championfiberglassproduct s.com) via email and told him that the "Mach 1 dual scoop" and the "cobra R cowl" are neck and neck in the poll.
I also asked how close to the "photoshopped" images could he come to the real thing, seeing are hoods are wider than a mustangs.
His answer "The mach 1 would not be a problem, but to widen the cobra r may take away from the look.".
So I am at a little bit of a crossroads as what to do with this current poll.
It sounds like Doug could create a Mach1 hood that is close to the look of the photoshopped image, no problem.
But the Cobra R cowl would be a lot skinier in apperance than the image posted for illustration (basically a mustang cobra R scoop applied to the hood).
What do you guys think?

Well I favor the Mach 1 Dual inlet hood. As you say I think it would adapt the best. I posted earlier.. that I thought the lines on outboard edge of the scoops should align with the natural body line of the hood. Other than that... it is the one to go with... IMHO.
