Just test drive a completley stock Marauder and you'll decide. I was going to beef up a CV PI until I discovered Marauders existed. Then I sold my soul to get one after I test drove it.

About three months ago my son found an absolutely mint 2002 Ford Crown Victoria LX Sport with 21000 miles on it. It had been traded in by a senior and had been babied since new. It is a very nice dark red (not DTR), and has very nice special aluminum wheels. It has the 239 HP 4.6L SOHC V8 engine. It has the same seats and console as a Marauder and a chromed shifter and base plate, and virtually every option that the MM has. Its about as cool as the CV can get. Its a nice car for the money. But, it still is not a Marauder. It hasn't got the 302 HP Cobra all-aluminum, DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder engine, or the ALCOA forged aluminum 18 in. wheels and 18 in. B.F. Goodrich tires. It rides nice, and it has some handling to it to (not like the Marauder).
*
I'm telling you this story only to illustrate to you that you should consider biting the bullet, and locating a nice 2003 or 2004 Marauder and buying it. I've owned my big red for two years now with absolutely no regrets, even with $ 3.19 p/gal premium gas. The only regret you'll have is that you didn't buy a Marauder in the first place. The Marauder is the real deal. No imitation here. All the performance parts are here too. And you can soup up a Marauder as far as you want to go, just like with a Mustang GT.
*
As far as rarity goes. I believe the CV LX Sport is close to as rare as a Marauder.
Jim

A 2003+ Crown Victoria can become just as good as a Marauder.

The reason for this is because it's a 2002 and doesn't have the suspension the 2003 and up Panther vehicles have. With the suspension and frame re-design a DOHC motor isn't that much of challenge, plus that way you don't have to worry about modding a stock Marauder(not that it would lose that much value anyway, re-sale seems really low for these cars)

This thread is heading towards people buying Mercury Capri's when they really wanted a Ford Mustang  . I had looked at CV LX Sports myself because I used to sell them (1st car I ever sold was a DTR LX Sport) and always liked the way they looked and rode. Then I came across the Marauder and I bit the bullet, dumped out my savings and went and bought one. I'd have to say out of owning a 1989 J-spec Supra (right side driverl), 1972 Dodge Challenger (426ci hemi 1st car I ever laid hands on and a lasting memory of my grandfather), a 1989 Ford Mustang mid 12's in 1/4, 2002 440fwhp Turbo Saturn SC2, 2001 AFRacing Ford Focus ZX3 and a 2006 F-350 Diesel Amarillo and hands down the Marauder has been my favorite to drive and own, also everyone here on MM.net has just made my ownership experience that much more dang enjoyable!!! Even with the car clubs and mustang clubs I have been in and being around people in person I will say MM.net members are truely thee best bunch of car guys and gals a car following could have. Marauders

Just as... but not the same.
The MM has the "little things" that set it aside.
The seats are unique to it.
The headlamps are too.
The wheels? Goes without saying.
You've got the front and rear bumper covers, suspension, interior and exterior treatments, and a VIN that screams "ONE OF ONLY 10000 (or so) MADE.
The Marauder is an interesting note in Mercury's history, and there won't be anything like her from FMC for a while.
OK, so I miss mine sometimes

Welcome to the MM site.:D

IMO it woud be cheaper to buy a Marauder than try and clone one.

But, it still is not a Marauder. It hasn't got the 302 HP Cobra all-aluminum, DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder engine, or the ALCOA forged aluminum 18 in. wheels and 18 in. B.F. Goodrich tires. Sorry, Jim, the engine in a Marauder is not the Cobra engine.

The Marauder engine is shared with the Aviator and the Mach I of '03 and '04. All of them (including the Cobra) share the same heads, valves, cams and so on, but the bottom end on a Cobra engine is quite different. It has forged aluminum con rods and steel forged crank, as well as having lower compression, 8.5:1 I believe. Therefore, the Marauder engine is (at best) "Cobra-like".

Likewise, gents, the expense of upgrading an LX Sport to the Marauder level would prolly cost more than the difference between the two on the used car market, and it will still be a knock-off and not the real thing.

Buy a Marauder, there's nothing else like them.

I traded a perfectly good low mileage 03 CV LX Sport for the Marauder after a 5 minute test drive on a wim, no intention to buy. You will spend enough money upgrading a CV LX Sport to pay the purchase difference and still not have a Marauder and and and you will note that most seem to be involved in modding their Marauders into super Marauders. The CV is a nice car but not even close in handling, power, speed and WTF is it appeal plus you will pass or be passed by a CV or GM every other minute. Make the leap. You will thank yourself. Different is GOOD. Dennis

If you're a fan of the Panther, why not go all the way and get the one that's the most exclusive of them all? I would think that even if you settled for the loaded CVLX Sport you would eventually meet a Marauder on the highway (or even worse -at a traffic light) and wonder just why in the heck you didn't go ahead get one while you could. CVs are a dime a dozen, Marauders are not. I've owned mine for almost two years now and have only met three others in my travels (excluding shows).
Go ahead, you know you want the real thing, and you will not regret it.

Thanks to every one who responded......

After thinking about it for a couple days i think i may just mod the cvpi and consruct a fake marauder, mainly because i can get bumpers, door panels ect. for some good prices....

Maybe after im done my first year of school or the car ill get a marauder. or hopefully my dad gets one he's been eyeing them.

Since you have a 2003 all of the Marauder pieces are plug-and-play ( though the front corner lights will take a small amount of futzing ) may be swapped onto the Crown Victoria [size=3]EXCEPT the front bumper fascia; oh it is doable IF to install .....

header panel
head lights ( and associated wiring harness(es) )
grille
corner lights ( why the heck not )
front bumper fascia ( obviously )
driving lights and associated brackets and wiring harness(es)
headlight switch ( to get the driving light functionality )

-or-

You could graft the lower portion of the Marauder front bumper fascia to the upper portion of the Crown Victoria bumper fascia ( at say the CV's bumper strip line ). *A CrownVic.net member ( JonW (http://www.crownvic.net/ubbthreads/showprofile.php?Cat=&User=9101&what=login) ) abandoned his grafting effort.

As for me ... Just another one of the fauxRauders :D *Next mod' on the list ... Maruader seats ( firmer than the LX Sport's ) and door panels; just need to install 'em.

BTW ... With a few bolt-ons ( and a tune ) the SOHC will have approximately the same HP as a stock DOHC, and will have more FtLbs.

A couple of pic's of a Marauderized+ Crown Victoria LX Sport interior .....
