I would appreciate it if some folks would share with me the $cost to install their 4:10 gear...I know some of you are clever enough to do it yourself, but not me...I want a profession shop to do it....
I got an estimate of $700.00....lets see $200+- for gear and $500 for install...seems a bit high...Is it ? :help:
As always...Thanks for the information/help, :D

My install (labor only) was $200. I was quoted $250 but it went so easy he charged me less.

It's a four hour task for a competent wrench with the right equipment at hand. What are your local labor rates?

I paid about $250 for my gear install. I provided the gears and the girdle cover. The shop provided the lube and it even included a 500 mile change the rear end lube out and inspection.

is the Marauder another car that needs a new driveshaft with 4.10 gears?

About the same amount I paid for my install, I was still under Waranty so I got the TSB on the axle done too.

Depends where you go. I had gotten quotes from the dealer, Sawgrass Ford, and they said $540 plus fulids which would of been aother $75 about. Thankfully, I had a friend that knew someone that was a Ford tech and could do it on the side. Again, not mentioning who to protect their identity. His friend charged me $250 and it was the same $75 extra for parts/ fluids. You'll need 3 cans of rear diff. fluid and one can of limited slip differential fluid plus a new pinion bearing. Your dealer should have all these parts in stock.

Doesn't need it, but a lot of people will talk you into it. Just get the stocker balanced unless you regularly exceed 130 MPH, and sit at that speed for awhile.

Not necessarily. Some do some don't. I've had mine up to 115mph (private track of course:D ) and there was no vibration.

I paid the same. Very reasonable if you ask me. I did supply all the parts minus a pinion bearing.

If you have a POS shaft like I did, you will...
My cost for the 4:10 gear change was: $318.00 labor
39.00 various seals
44.00 Fluids from FMC
5.00 ring gear bolt
5.00 shop supplies
----------
$411.00 total

Four hour?? Is that with a lunch break? So, just how long should it take, in your "humble" opinion?

In my "humble" opinion, for book hours, I can see four. The reality of it is less. But that is why book hour exists $$$$$

Flat-rate repair/install times are a fair answer for queries such as this. If the consumer/shopper knows what the flat-rate books call for on a particular repair/install in labor hours, and can add/multiply the labor rate per hour local to him, all is good, right?
In my hood, it's X times 75 bucks per hour for me, which means I can get a professional gear swap for 300 bucks in labor, plus parts. This doesn't sound so bad when compared to the rates posted here in this thread, at this time.
Therefore, I can also predict other installs of custom mods on my Marauder, and from a certified professional wrench who is industry licensed, and guarantees his skill when I supply parts. 100 percent guarantee across the board when he gets all the parts himself, including fluids, bearings and gaskets and so on. The only exception to this is (of course) future wear/break under power. We both understand this.
Again, I suggest that this is the best possible deal, it's been fair to me. It's a few more bucks in the labor equasion, yes, but worth that in the long run, IMHO. I have no use for any wrench who takes a glimpse at my project and my intentions, who winks at me and says "I can fix you up for half that".
Been there, did this with my Marauders, and since 2002. Losers...Drunks and dead beats looking for the quick buck today, 'cause they will be gone, or, full of excuses tomorrow when you break because of them and their "winks". End of story.
Jason, why do you have to be such a stiff pr!ck about my posts? Is it because you want to show us your's?
Man-oh-man...Are you really capable of a fair and bias free testing and review of the Zack and Mac control arms? I'm having my doubts now, so, what ever it is, please flush it out before you review our control arms. I need to know you're going to give both sets of control arms a fair shake.

All the dealers I went to in South Florida said 5-6 hours. My friend's friend did it in about 3 1/2 to 4. I don't know how you guys got it done at the dealer so cheaply unless you all got connections. I was fortunate to know someone who knew someone.

I've been shopping around after I received all this great info from y'all...
Got prices at only reputable shops, that came recommended...
Last quote was $300-$350... (not including gear)now that sound reasonable...
I don't want cheap for the sake of cheap...I just want a fair price for good responsible workmanship...
Ordered the 4:10 from Reinhart today.....:woohoo: :2thumbs:
Thanks again for all the info....:D

is the Marauder another car that needs a new driveshaft with 4.10 gears? The short answer is "maybe"...or perhaps "probably" is more accurate.
Before you make up your mind, read this (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5163)...
BTW, driveline critical speed for the Panther platform is more like 90 MPH, not the 130 as mentioned in an earlier reply ^^^. Also, since driveline critical speed is a function of FLEX, not BALANCE, you may never feel a thing. Your first indication that you have a problem will be the puddle of ATF you one day find directly under the tailshaft housing seal.

I was under the impression that you would feel a vibration when the driveshaft started whipping....is this not the case? I was planning on the 4.10's shortly, but not if I need a new driveshaft. Of course, I could pay with plastic, and call it a day.....;)

That's very close to what I paid. I found an expert shop that only does
diff's. Took 0ne hour! He also replaced my Drive Shaft with the MMTRIX
one from Dennis as I felt it was a safe move and easy to do all at once.
He replaced the diff. fluid with his standard own and replaced that
500 miles later after a a inside recheck and a clean wipe out with my Ford
synthetic for $40.00.
I have never had a problem since.

I was under the impression that you would feel a vibration when the driveshaft started whipping....is this not the case? As I said above, it MAY be the case...the D/S may actually "whip" enough to be felt, but depending on the factors Jerry outlines in his explanation that I linked to, there are more things to be considered.
Remember, too, that critical speed only becomes an issue when you get very close to or exceed it. If you rarely drive much over 90 for more than a quick burst, you should have no trouble at all...
