Last night cruising home from work on a major highway, I had a "close encounter". I was travelling at 50 mph in the center lane of Route 1. I was virtually all alone on this stretch of road (quite unusual for that time of day).

Up ahead was a major intersection, I had the green light. However, I try to always anticipate problems. At the intersection with the red light in their direction was a white Toyota Corolla or something. I guessed that the driver was gonna make a right turn on red before I got there. Sure enough, he did. But to my surprise, he kept turning really wide and ended up right in my lane. :stupid:

I couldn't slide left 'cause I wasn't sure that he wasn't gonna continue across all three lanes. So, I hit the brakes and buried the nose of the Marauder. The stock brakes and ABS did their job and hauled me down to a roll in quick order. A potential disaster avoided. :D

I gave the driver a blast on the horn sometime during this event; but as I passed him by, I noticed that he had that "completely oblivious" look that is common in Northern Virginia. The poor fool had no clue as to what he had done. The Marauder had saved him. I suspect that many other vehicles out there would not have stopped in time. :(

So, ya'll be careful out there and anticipate those clueless drivers. They will do the unexpected. Just be ready for 'em.

Good job Charlie. It is a good feeling when you avoid those moving obstacles, isn't it?

Way to go Charlie, it's always good when there is no crunch at the end of the brake slamming.:banana2:

Charlie, great job of defensive driving. There are so many who fail to get themselves into driving mode that it is a crap shoot every time you turn the key. Be safe by being safe. Dennis:)

Charlie, Glad to hear that you and "OLE BLUE" are OK!

You are absolutley right...you MUST assume that the driver will, in fact, execute the most idiotic and dangerous maneuver possible.

SOB would have been pi$$ed if you damaged the Marauder!

Correction .... S.O.B. would have been pi$$ed if I damaged his Marauder! He's already counting on me to roll the MM over to him and is actively scouting for my next car. Right now the Dodge Challenger pressure is starting to build. Once it is released, he will go into the high pressure routine. How do you think I got the Marauder in the first place? ;)

Chucky ????? Please, Mark !!!

Similiar event happened to me. Coming around a bend, a white moving van and I eye each other and the Bas-Terd pulled out anyway. I was to fast to hit the brakes...would have plowed right into him, so I did what had to be done. Turned and floored the beast and had to go around him in the front. Get this...the SOB didn't stop or slow down. After calm and reason took over I thought to myself...in any other car...it would have been a lot different.

Mercury Marauder....greatest car ever made!!!

Glad to hear disaster averted. Sadly stuff like that seems to occur to often. A lot of people in this area do not deserve to have a license becuase they are way to unattentive when they drive.

I can see making a mistake from time to time, we're all human, but something like this was a just plain bad decision on their part.

Still glad to here you made it out of that one with no problems, keep that blue shiny and dent-free! (No easy feat in N. VA as you've shown)
