View Full Version : A touch of ruby red reflective...

I have always fancied the Silver Birch over all other MM colors. I even considered trading my June of '02 MM purchase when they came out later in production. Still, it's a very big automobile, and it's size demands some added touches.

I started out with the EBS brake kit from Reinhart, which has black powdercoated rotors. I had the front and rear calipers ceramic coated (Jet Coat), and I painted the visible portion of the brake pads red. That didn't seem enough, and Merman's "significant other", Sherrie, painted my centercaps (the area around the godshead) and she a great job of it too. Nope, not enough yet. Something was still missing.

Then I won a Jim Beam racing cap at Barry's back-yard bash (thanks, BigJoeP) and it sat beside me all the way home, as I considered what should be next. Well, a set of Bob White ruby red reflective inserts made their way to me (thanks, Dennis Reinhart, 'cause they are out of production), and I got my hands on some matching ruby red reflective pin stripe from 3M. A couple of hours later, the #3 car is done. Complete. Finished (except for some tint, appointment made).

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/showimage.php?i=3395&c=3&userid=392

More pics in my gallery, and yeah, it looks a tad orange because it was a very sunny day here. But, IMHO, this is just what my SB needed to look sharp, and the racing cap matches as well.

I've already heard from Zack, and for a guy with a candy apple red engine, he's got no room to talk. "Looks like junk" seems a compliment, coming from him...LOL!

Carry on, gents.

The stripe? To each his own. It's YOUR car.

Stripe or no stripe, it's still a Marauder. 'Nuff said.

Geeze. Mac's tastes, Mac's car. I think the red is a nice accent color on the silver. It's not like he painted big green dollar signs on it and mounted 28" wheels with rubberband tires.

J Umm...Jeeze, I thought I was done, J, but I will "pause to reflect" on your suggestion. May have to send my trunk lid to Tipton In., but wtf right? Mac, I like it a lot. I too think the Silver Birch is a great looking Marauder, my favorite also. I really like the play with the red flashes. I have been fooling around with red accents inside and have long thought that a gold insert in that exact location would look good to me on my DTR. I haven't found a gold the same as my other decals so have not done it yet. Thanks for another great idea and the pics so that others can make decisions based on how the mod hits their eye. Whether or not I have liked your ideas (I have shamelessly copied most) you have always posted pics, how to's and you without fail have been out front with tests and evaluations and mods. I admire that and you and find the little boy :bs: cheap shots uncalled for and undeserved. Thank you for all of your contributions. :2thumbs: Dennis

Like I said, I like it and now seeing it I think I might go the same route. I already replaced my interior lights with red blubs. Usually silver with blue accents looks good but thats something thats totally silver. The silver MM has chrome and black(tires and windows) accents. Mac where did you get the accent trim for the sides? I smell another mod coming within the next 2 wks :)

Mac's link takes you to his gallery. there in addition to the red stripe shots is a shot of the SB without stripes. Check them both out. the stripes really add something to the car. Dennis

The good thing about stripes, is, they come off easy.EXACTLY!! its good sometimes to be different and original not like all the rest. it think it looks cool. and the good thing is if you get tired of it or want to go back stock "they come off" good job mac. I also like the the silver birch. i traded in a 03 silver birch explorer sport on my o4 dtr mm. when i bought my marauder there was a silver brich and my dtr on the lot sitting next to each other and the sun peeked out and the dtr poped out at me and i went with it. but let me tell you taking care of dark toreador red compared to silver birch is like having a high maintance woman living in a downtown penthouse or the girl next door. and sometimes i wish i went with the girl next door.. zaino bros love me.. i love my dtr but it keeps me busy  MAC

As another owner of a SB I would just like to say, Way to Go Mac! I think the car looks sharp and it reminds me of what a lot of us guys did on the early 80's Mustangs. Keep pushing the envelope Mac as I believe you are on the right track!

I also have a silver birch, but not sure red is the route for me...I was thinking a Forrest Green. Dont know how the SS inserts would look on the SB but probably would be hard to notice. But then again plain is fine with me too for now.

That was my initial impression of SS Inserts on a Silver MM. However, Mike Poore put 'em on his and it looks really good. The contrast between the mirrored letters and the SB paint is just the right touch. IMHO.

Thanks for the comments Y'all, I appreciate the compliments.

Yes, the SS inserts look great on all color MMs, it's a nice touch with the OEM wheels, and the wave trim. The secondary benefit on my mind in this mod, is the 3M reflective nature of the pinstripe. It looks kind of bright in the pics, 'cause I had the flash on automatic.

I leave for work when it's still dark out, summer and winter, and the route to the office is litered with 4 o'clock taverns and packaged good stores, so, the drunk driver ratio is a tad higher than you would expect at this hour. I've had some near misses, and I hope the reflective material will give me an edge. OTOH, I may just be marking the target, we'll "see?" LOL!

BTW, if you are like minded, this tape comes in clear reflective too, check your local body shop for the real deal.

Hmmm...Wonderng if I should do the black MM too, it already has the ruby red reflective inserts...

MM03MOK

It looks very sharp on #3 and very well placed in the body side molding. A stripe that wide on the upper curve of the doors/fenders would be too much but it works quite well down below. Hmmm, clear reflective. The Blackbird has Ford Blue Reflective BWI....maybe the same color 3M would work, or a medium gray. We had the pinstripes we put on a couple of years ago (2- 1/8" on the curve) taken off when she was detailed last Fall.

I like it!

But if you're gonna follow the wisecracker's advice about the Yosemite Sam mudflaps, you might as well go all the way and get the ones with the little LED's coming out of his gun that you can hook up to the brake lights, and they flash when you hit the brakes!

HAving read all the post-- I like what you did Mac-- -although I don't own a SB, it looks real cool....which has given me ideas as well about my black MM---which only has the red rear inserts as well....so I'm thinking maybe RED or WHITE reflective stripes like you have done on your SB----might look good against the black color....hummmm...heck --as you say--its tape and can be taken off if you want to change your mind later--not like its been painted on-----yeah----that Black MM....say ..if you should do yours anytime soon---throw out a pic or two for us to see......again...good updating to your SB...........Tom
