With all this smack talk heading into SSHS6, I thought I'd better get ready...
http://john.frieltek.com/toomanyfords/marauder/gmc671/mockup1.jpg
Positioning the blower to mark the template. Did you know that our engines sit exactly 1" off center to the passenger side? I am debating whether or not to center the blower to the hood or to the engine. All of these pictures are centered on the engine.

http://john.frieltek.com/toomanyfords/marauder/gmc671/mockup3.jpg
^^ This one is with the throttle bodies and air cleaner mounted. This is looking up the hood line over the front grill. Remember the upper pulley has not been mounted yet!
http://john.frieltek.com/toomanyfords/marauder/gmc671/mockup4.jpg
This is looking across the fenders to see how much sticks out of the hood. Again, no front drive yet so the whole front drive and belt will clear the hood. [evil grin!]
http://john.frieltek.com/toomanyfords/marauder/gmc671/mockup5.jpg
^^ Yep, time to cut that hole in the hood!
Cheers!

John,
I,m not shure how you can play side to side that thing, but, if you have some freeplay with the template, i would vote to center it on the hood since the "V" upper lines of the hood will probably yell OFFCENTER when the hood is closed. And it might be the same using the front grille as a eye measure.
Otherwise, making a smoke screen with those tires could be the ticket to keep the lurkers a couple hundreds of yards away so they can't measure anything valuable !!! :D
EDIT
OK OK. After a night of sleep: Jman got a point. The engine is first for the usage. Center it to the engine !! We don't want a bank of cylinders to be unhappy. Just pretend it is engeneered to be centered, mass wise, with you in the driver seat and that it was a real pain in the back bottom to install 1 inch off center !!!
John,
Don't even - unequal runner lengths could mean disaster in that radical an application. Take the hood off and shed another thirty pounds!
That is just brutal looking.
Good luck,
J

I knew you were going to have this problem, we can talk about that later. Meanwhile, center the blower for it's best performance, and explain the "tilt" when asked?
While there is a reasonable explanation for something being off center looking, in my heart I believe no one will notice, or, mentuion it to you, because it all has such an overwhelming impact to begin with.
One or two anal focused observers may chuckle when they notice something off center, but e v e r y o n e will notice a performance related shortcoming, or, shortcut.
Rock on, John!

LOL, there is alot more to going fast than huge tires and a blower hanging out of the hood. Heck, cars like that get blown off the track every weekend here in Detroit.
Such bold talk coming from someone who hasn't even fired up the car yet is pretty funny. Although my hat is off to John for taking a "different" approach, I sure hope he isn't taking himself as seriously as some other folks are.
That car has a loooooong way to go before it proves itself a contender. Those rear wheels alone will cost serious loss of et at the track. If the motor isn't making at least 800hp it'll be grossly "over tired."
This, of course, ignores the unproven suspension and tune, not to mention that Jerry and Marty have a big jump start on weight reduction.
No offense in any way meant here John, so please don't take it that way. I only assume your having some fun with all of this. But, when I see folks jumping on the wagon making bets, I find it pretty silly. Don't get me wrong, if done right, I'm sure you can get that car movin' quickly. But we both know it'll take far far more than 281 cubes and a 671 to do it. I'd tend to think that a few successful shake down passes would be made before making betting statements wouldn't you?
Anyway, power on dude. Center the blower on the motor. Its the only choice. Looks alone make your project a monster.

I'm glad to see the poll leaning the way I want to go. I will be taking my template to the machine shop today to have them begin on the blower mount plate. It is configured to center on the engine, as the poll has shown. The drivers side hole will be cut an extra inch wider to compensate and give me more room for the throttle linkage that hangs down on that side.

Anyone who has put the time, effort and money like Jerry and Marty as well as you other 11 second guys deserve and have the respect of all of us. Then again, there are several of us here who are building motors and will reach new et lows with our Marauders, which yes, needs to be proven. A lot of members here on the site are going with new forged motors, turbos, staged nitrous systems, new blowers and more. Either way, this fall should reveal some very interesting results for us all in the timeslip page. But let us not lose site that we are all Marauder guys here:beer:. Heck, if it were my project, I'd want to talk it up too. Let the man have his fun. It doesn't take anything away from anyone here. That's :bs: and you know it.
From what I know, John is making specific decisions to make this a show/street cruiser and not a track queen. I don't think the "world's fastest Marauder" is in the plans. If it happens as a result - great.
But it's obviously making some folks nervous, and as it seems, a bit jealous, no?

A few thought's on this build:
1) the car needs a certified roll cage to be allowed on most racetracks.
a. unless a club rents a track and has insurance to allow suicide
2) It isn't street legal in any of the 50 states with that blower blocking
the view
a. A cop could make you have the car towed away after pulling you over
b. An out of state safety violation might ruin a vacation
3) 35 spline axles and safety hubs are required for safety. 31's are too small
4) wheelie bars will be needed
5) NHRA requires a hood but probably wouldn't allow this build on the
track anyway
6) all the above is known by most people reading this thread

1) the car needs a certified roll cage to be allowed on most racetracks. [a. unless a club rents a track and has insurance to allow suicide]
I believe there is a specified ET I have to be under to force a roll-cage. That cannot be determined during TECH and you know it. My track is IHRA and they can't wait to see it run! [the rest is just theatrics and you know it... phh]
2) It isn't street legal in any of the 50 states with that blower blocking the view a. A cop could make you have the car towed away after pulling you over b. An out of state safety violation might ruin a vacation

So? I'm sure that if anyone in else in Detroit wanted to spend Cubic Dollars on their MM to get right to the top of the chart that you'd have no problem with this. Why should I care how long it took someone else to get there? And, more importantly, why does this make me out to be the bad guy?
Helll, anyone can go out and buy a 10 second Fox body on eBay these days and it doesn't take away from those that took forever to get there without all the power adder tech we have today.

Just in case, I still have a trailer hitch for my car and can use it to pull yours down the track... :D
It would be awesome to see you down at SSHS6. Seriously, come on down!
Cheers!

But from now on, if you see a thread like this just have fun or don't play at all.
Ooooohhhhhh.....I get it now!
Okay...here goes:

I have absolutely no idea what kind of performance we can expect from John's mods...but I don't care!! They look cool!!! The coolness alone will propel that monster marauder DEEP into the 9 second zone!!
13s ? Don't make me laugh!!
12s ? What!! Chuck Norris is gonna roundhouse kick you in the head!!
11s ?*sigh* still in the dark about how cool these mods are, aren't ya?
10s ? Well, at least were getting warmer....
9s ? You BETCHA! The very first run will be a 9.87 @ 136.
That's right, you saw me predict it here first :D
All of you should just send the case of pop to John right now. No need to waste gas...its too expensive.
JOHN'S CAR RULEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
how's that?
All kidding aside, John, I do very much respect your project. Its by far the most ambitious project anyone has attempted. No matter what times the car ultimately runs, its already a very neat idea. I do mean that. I wasn't trying to be a wet blanket, just trying to bring a little drag racing reality check to the thread that had so many folks willing to bet on a project car that hasn't even been down the track one time yet. As I said, I meant no offense. Have fun with it :)

Keep up the great work John.
Personally, someone telling me there is something that cannot be done or I can't do myself, makes me want to do it even more.
So have a good time

Some super secret weapon to unleash at SSHS6?
Yeah. JD probably won't even open the hood to his car with fear of us seeing his F1R blower. Who really knows what that HighwayCrusier has planned:confused: . JD we know your not a :chicken:. You will be running with the big :dogrun: next to me the :geezer: .

Please don't encourage him, Rider90, he has clearly gone "over the edge" and is getting into madness with this project. ;)
I am a highly qualified automotive test pilot and I now am officially offering my services.
IF (and that's the major factor) the 1" difference doesn't matter as far as performance, then center it on the hood. IF it makes any difference in operation, then center it for best performance.

Hey, get your hands out of my pockets... both of you. :D
I know what this is about, you're both trying to distract attention from those built motors, super-duper-chargers, nitrous systems and what-not you two are tinkering with for higher aspirations.
Don't try to drag me in the middle of your shenanigans. I just hit the track on a blue moon for curiosity only. Ya'll don't have anything to worry about me. ;)
