View Full Version : Is a fuel pressure guage important?

I have an open space in my dual pillar pod.
I was thinking about the Autometer 4363 electric FP gauge.
Good idea? Or should I put a pressure guage for my Snow meth kit in instead?

Thanks!

Depends on if you think you need to monitor your fuel pressure.

FWIW, I like mine!

I think a FP gauge is a good idea. I saved a SC motor in my mustang with a FP gauge. I noticed a drop under boost conditions. I checked it out, and sure enough, my brand new walbro 255lph unit was going out on me. I replaced the pump and all was well. Without that gauge, I would not have known I had a problem until it was too late and I ran lean and POP goes the motor. Just my 2 cents.

Not to hijack your thread Rich, but this brings up a question I've been meaning to ask:
What would be the next guage y'all would buy if the stock Autometers were upgraded from fancy idiot lights to actual guages?
I'm talking the cigarette lighter location.

An accurate water temp would be helpful. Damn dash gauge doesn't move until it's really hot.

FWIW I have trans temp in the cig lighters, Nitrous Pressure and A/F on the pod , soon to be upgraded to a REAL af guage. Also considering fuel pressure.

Let me clarify my answer.

if you have ANY FI motor with agressive boost and you do not monitor fuel pressure or fuel to air ratio put enough money in the piggy bank for a new block.

Rich,

For the meth, if you use it as an octane booster, is is not as important since a failure won't mean an immediate grenading of engine block. If you use it as a significant HP tool, you will have to be real fast at lifting the throttle if a meth injection problem arise while continiously staring at the gauge. In that case, a big tree might be faster in putting a dent in that block ... (!)

IMO, a possible lack of fuel is probably more important to monitor.

Ok, thanks for the thoughts on this.
I ordered the FP gauge and the water temp ( I think you're right Mac.) with an extra sender. I think I'll put one sender in the engine coolant line and another in the intercooler line, then have a switch to go back and forth. ( Idea from Joe Walsh... life's been good to him so far.)
I just don't know where I'm gonna mount the temp gauge yet....

Since this thread started I've been looking for one. Its tough to come up with the right gauge but I won't do anything Autometer due to their caveman backlighting except for the nexus line which is a little too costly.

I have an ISSPRO trans temp (not installed yet) Nordskog Digital green oil pressure and boost in the OEM locations, and an AEM A/F Wideband gauge also not installed. I have 3 slots open (2 pillar, 1 column) so the location decision is based 90% on backlighting.

Can anyone name brands? Besides DiProcol, Autometer, Nordskog, Stewart-Warner.

Also, what is better...electric or mechanical with an isolator?

These are the gauges I went with. Dual digital gauges. (http://spatechnique.com/)

The "look to match" is secondary to the need for accuracy.

I saw these in Haggis' car. Noticed them right away. I really like the idea, and wish I would have waited to upgrade to real ones.

Perhaps a swap in still in my future.....once the S/C gets installed.

I went with almost the same setup Haggis has.
Boost and fuel, voltage and oil pressure.
My one green backlight just failed on me on the boost/fuel gauge so back it goes.

I'd do tranny temp.
