View Full Version : Fresh Oil or the Wrong Oil? and idle RPM

I just did my first oil change on my all stock 300A MM. The reason it is my first oil change is because I have only had it a month. My question is ... will changing the oil drop the idle RPM in drive from 1000 to ~500? I put in a fresh 6 quarts of 5W-20 synthetic. Did the dealer use the wrong oil or was it just time for an oil change? Will Oil effect (or affect I can never remember) the idle RPM? I am going to add a rant as well. WHO the :censor: puts an oil filter in that stupid spot! Why back in my day we FILLED an oil filter with oil during an oil change and we liked it that way! I started changing the oil in the family car with my dad when I was 6. (I still have an old "can" of oil in the gargage.) I just cant understand not filling the filter with oil. I still make an attmept, but it just makes a mess. Thank you for letting me rant. //rant *off*

I do not know of any relationship between oil freshness and engine RPM.

Perhaps indirectly? The lubrication system in our engines is part of the overall cooling scheme, perhaps you just cooled off the engine enough to affect a temporary condition? Or, the stuff you took out was causing the engine temps to run higher than normal, and now that you have changed that, temps are more normal, and the idle may go down. Just supposin'...

Otherwise, I see no connection.

Yeah, the oil filter is a knuckle buster.

If you dont have headers, the oil filter is accessed easily from the top.

I do not know of any relationship between oil freshness and engine RPM.^^^wht Mac said^^^ An oil's viscosity cannot have that large an effect on idle speed.

I do agree that the oil filter is not as nicely accessible as it is on my '99 Taurus, for instance. To keep the mess to a minimum, get one of the little plastic deflectors that come on the '05 and up panthers. I don't have the p/n handy; maybe someone else does?

I have used my oil filter wrench to loosen the filter from the top but have never tried to remove it that way. Will give it a try next oil change.

Oil deflector part number, 5W1Z-6N634-AA.

Thanks, Blue Oval... I'll make sure that gets in the part number FAQ immediately.

Steve,

As for filling the new oil filter before you install it, ----- well it can't be done as it will all pour out, HOWEVER, do what I do. Take the new filter and pour oil into the center quickly (note I said quickly) so the oil goes up to the top. Then roll the filter around in your hand, and watch the oil level inside the filter go down as the oil gets absorbed into the filter material. After a minute or so, all the oil you poured in is absorbed, and you can now spin the new filter into the engine.

Not as good as filling the filter to the top, but much better than installing a dry filter.

OK --Mac-Sarge has hit it on the nail--It was old crappy oil causing the higher temps---plus the crap that comes with it being in their too long and other stuff........it needed an oil change badly--and the needle showed it---...and as far as the filling the filter with oil before putting it on.........hocky puck!!!! who every heard of such nonsence-----thats why you put in the extra oil at the end --otherwise --the extra 3/4 to 1 Qt needed to fill it up after starting the engine--run a minute --then shut down --and look again at the "stick" -add a bit ==re-do the run==stop --and re-check till its "full"...............no spillage or whatever with the filter thingy---------or have I misunderstood the whole thing here!!!

and as far as the filling the filter with oil before putting it on.........who every heard of such nonsence-----thats why you put in the extra oil at the end. I believe the customary reasoning is concern about running the engine on a dry oil system, even for a moment. I don't worry about this myself, but I do respect the precaution.

I also don't worry about warming up an engine before driving it. It's been my habit from my first day behind the wheel as a licensed driver, to start the car and go. Cold start idling wastes more gas than anything else I do.

Sorry, it's just me. No offense meant to anyone for what they believe in.
