I guess he spent all his money on the 20s and didnt have the extra money to take it somewhere other than Wal Mart for an oil change....

I don't use Wal-Mart (my wife does) but what's wrong with them? Around here they have been more accurate and more reasonable than our LM dealer.
I go to Jiffy Lube when I don't do it myself or have it at the dealer for something else anyway. $25 out the door and I don't have to mess with it, and I go to Wendy's for a burger while they work.

I guess as much as those of us here LOVE our cars, its sad to see someone who doesnt think much of it as to think of running it to Wal Mart for an oil change.......

I always take mine to the goodyear shop...they look forward to see my car come in, Ive seen them rock, paper, scissors to see who gets to do the oil change...I know my car is in good hands, and I'm in and out in usually 20 mins to a half an hour...for $21.00
I dont ever shop at Walmart..its not that i dont think that they couldn't do an oil change...because IMHO any idiot can do an oil change...But I've never bought a damn thing from them for personal moral reasons.

Same here, I do mine myself. I guess for me it's sorta a pride thing, then again I do pretty much all of my work.

I worked at an oil change place once. The 5w-30 and 10w-30 came out of the same drum.
I don't change my own oil on the Marauder either. I have a really good shop do it. The shop is in a town of 1,500 people and if they screwed up more than once, they'd be out of business.

I worked at an oil change place once. So did I, and after one week I had to quit because i couldn't be a part of what they did to peoples' cars.....trust me, you don't want to get your oil canged at one of those places.
I change my own oil also. But it has nothing to do with "pride". it has to do with me not trusting people with my car. Most mechanics don't give a rip about peoples' cars. And trying to find an honest mechanic is like trying to find an honest physician, or an honest Attorney. Good luck! Yeah, there's a few out there, but they're few and far between.
My brakes are now shot after 49,650 miles. But I'll be doing them myself this week for the reasons mentioned above. Guys like our own "Carfixer" from this board aren't easy to find.

Everybody has to determine how important their car is to them. I no longer service my own car, I take it to a place where I am on a first name basis with the mechanics that work on my car. They know me and my cars and how I feel about them.
I do not EVER leave my car and return when the service is done, I watch all the work being done on my car from a walkway that runs the length of the service bays, when I have my car serviced I walk under car and inspect the underside of my car when it's up on the rack.
Maybe my situation is unique, I don't know; but it works for me.

I actually look forward to changing my own oil in my MM. Go figure but at least I know I am doing it right.

Good point earlier in the thread. The lowest paid and newest, least trained techs do the oil changes which is why every dealership has had at least one customer leave the dealership with the old oil filter gasket jammed up with the new one and seize thier engine on the way home as the oil runs out on the street. I am with Smokie, I don't do it but I watch everything even though I am on a first name basis with my service techs. One is the shop foreman and the other the tranny specialist. Both enjoy driving my car with gusto and have on the way to lunch several times. I always find 2 or 3 or more guys hanging in the engine bay as the guys who do the work love showing it off. They like working on it and appreciate that I know the quality of the work that they do. I recommend that everyone find a Ford/L/Mdealership that will allow you to build such a relationship with a service writer and service techs. It is good piece of mind and with a little advance bargaining (I learned from SergntMac) no more expensive that the cheapy joints. Dennis:beer:

Now THIS I understand. I still shop at Wal-Mart, mainly because their competiton for most products is 20 miles away, but certainly understand this viewpoint. My only point was that WM has been better for getting things done right than lots of other places, and cheaper, too. My wife just got 4 tires from them because it was cheaper than even ordering them from tirerack and having them mounted locally.
That, and she gets her shopping done while there, so the time is negligible given that she's there anyway.

I guess it also depends on each individual store as well, how well the Lube manager trains his people/does quality control.

Under warranty, the dealership ALWAYS gets the nod. That way, if anything ever goes wrong during the warranty period, the dealership not only did it, but they've got record of doing it ;)

Never had it changed at the dealer or by anyone else but me. I like to do my own. I know what exactly is being done. Just my .02

I get it done free at the dealer I bought it from. Otherwise I used to change all my own oil in all the cars but I am such a slob I got tired of the mess I always make. After trying several different quick lube type places I finally found one I trust and take all my cars there including my wifes XC90. Except for the MM which again is free at the dealer.

The last time I brought a vehicle to a jiffy lube was 3 years ago, I left there with my avalanche after a simple oil change, I get about 15 miles away from the place and the transmission started acting up on, like holding a gear too long and just shifting erratic. I pulled the dipstick out and it turns out that the dope who worked on my truck decided to top off my tranny fluid, problem was my truck wasnt warmed up when I brought it to them so the fluid was in the cold setting, they filed it up to the hot setting and when it finally warmed up it was too much fluid.
That tranny had a drain plug so there I was on my back draining what looked like 2 quarts of fluid into a drainpan.
I also brought my Ex GF's car to a jiffy lube for a oil change and they told her that according to their computer, she needed a tranny service as well, Meanwhile she had a Honda accord with only 15k miles on it.
I asked the price and they said $65, I then told them that if they are aware that this car according to the manual can go 120k between fluid changes?
They insisted until I called the manager over and showed him the manual, we managed to get our oil change for free but Ill never go anywhere but my own shop to do my maintenace.
I have also heard of power steering fluid being poured into the brake master cylinder, Cars leaving the shop with no oil, Oil filters not being replaced with a new one during the oil change, Oil cap not replaced and oil shooting all over the engine, and tools left under the hood,(My father has already collected 3 filter wrenches and a nice snap-on wrench).

I used to have a white 1985 Chevy Citation X-11. I loved that car and still regret getting rid of it. I remember stomping on the gas and having my head snap back as the cassette poppes out of the tape deck. It also had the coolest interior of any car I've ever had.

I have seen Citations for years but I have no clue about them, Were they something like the Vega where you can get a V-8 in one?

You still see some of them around. They really are an underrated car. My Citation got me through a couple years of high school and all 4 years of college. I sold it in January with just over 65,000 original miles. It was a great little car and had no major problems.
I just needed something a little more reliable than a 22-year old vehicle. Not a day goes by that I don't think about it.

No V8, but the X-11 came with a V6 and upgraded tuned suspension. I beleive it was toted as being an impressive off-road rally car, with handling akin to the likes of porsches and lamborghini's of the time.

Oil cap not replaced and oil shooting all over the engine.
Had that happen to me (Well, MrsTR did) in the Mystaque.
Saw it happen at my dealer too. The Service Manager handled it well though. Got the mess cleaned up and gave the customer a free oil change for her trouble. (Also checked to see which tech did the change and handled that end of it with class too.)
