I'm thinking about getting the Art Carr tranny pan with drain. Any special tranny fluid I should use besides OEM and how much fluid will I need?

You need to use Mercron V. If you are just doing the pan I'd get about 8 - 10 quarts. 2 or 3 quarts drained from the old pan 5 - 6 quarts for the new pan. It doesn't go bad and you'll have enough for the next drain n fill.

I just put on the Ford Racing pan today. You get the pan and a new set of 14 bolts to use - no filter or gasket. I got a new filter from Advance
Auto and re-used the gasket as you are supposed to. Works fine.

I'm thinking about getting the Art Carr tranny pan with drain. Any special tranny fluid I should use besides OEM and how much fluid will I need?If you are also changing the filter, you'll remove just over 4 quarts. IIRC, the Art Carr pan holds an additional 2 quarts over stock, so 6 quarts should be enough; get 7 to be safe.

The 4R70W requires Mercon V. I use nothing but Motorcraft in The Blackbird, but Castrol also makes a good Mercon V...and I've heard Mobil 1 synthetic ATF is now approved for the Mercon V spec...use any of them with no worries.

stryker, if the filter in your 4R70W has been changed anytime in the last 30,000 miles, you shouldn't need to replace it, however, if you're not sure, it's a good idea to do so...it's an inexpensive part.

How much are the pans with the drain in it? I'm not as worried about the extra capacity, but I want one for my 97 F150. It starts to chatter about every 20K, and I'm thinking it would help if I just drain the pan at every oil change. I'll probably switch it to Mercon V also.

mrjones, the Ford replacement pan w/drain plug, p/n F8UZ-7A194-AA, lists for about $90, but I'm sure you can do better from Ray "The Dealer" (vendor here).

Absolutely switch to Mercon V...Ford has retroactively approved it for all years of 4R70W. With Mercon V, you shouldn't need to drain the ATF anywhere near as often, but do it at least every 30,000 miles.
