What exactly does a computer chip do? What are some great ones; better yet, who makes the best ones? What do they cost and what effect will they have on the engine?

The computer runs the engine and controls the tranmission shifting taking input from alot of sensors. If you are talking about changing the cars computer program the way to go is with a programmer. A customized program (tune) is loaded into the programmer and it flashes or changes the program on the computer in the car. You definately need one if you have a Marauder. Your MM will run and shift much better than stock. If you plan on doing any upgrade (gears, etc.) you'll need a programmer and tune to change the speedometer calibration. The cost is in the $350.00 - $500.00 range. lidio (Alternative Auto) and Dennis Reinhart are supporting vendors of this site and can supply you with a programmer and "tune". The most popular programmer is made by SCT.
