View Full Version : Want to drill in my trunk...

Hey, I've been gone for the last two months, and see lots of cool stuff still going on here. (Lost my job and no $ to fool with the car and job hunting is full time work! Still I should have checked in.)

Anyway, quick question: I have a 2.5 lb. fire extinguisher rolling around in my trunk. I want to install the nifty hold down bracket for it. The place I have in mind is just to the left of the spare, just under and to the front of the sub woofer, on that little shelf, right at the edge? It will fit there perfectly, and be accessible yet up off the trunk organizer.

Can anyone tell me what's under there? I plan on drilling just 4 small holes, each about 3/16ths. and mounting ther hold down.

So pretend your locking down the spare and reach your left hand to the back of the subwoofer and drop it. You will be setting it right on that 90 degree edge where I want to mount it.

Thanks for any input. Last thing I want to do is rupture some crucial subassembly or wiring or whatever.

Thanks guys.

That is where the gas tank it located  so be careful where you drill and how long your screws are. I mounted my Brinkman 4 D-cell flashlight on the shelf right in front of the CD changer. That is also where I plan on mounting the fire extinguisher as soon as I get one. Looking for a Halon extinguisher.

I have my extinguisher mounted on the left side of the trunk where the factory CD changer would have been installed. Its out of the way and easy to grab in a emergency.

Mount on the floor to the left or right. Nothing under there. You could even bolt thru.

DO NOT MOUNT ON SHELF. The gas tank is under there!!!!

I have punctured the tank in a Vic with 1/2" screw and had to buy the damn thing!

Wasn't there a pic somewhere of areas in the trunk you could drill and areas to avoid? Maybe it's in the CVPI reference manual...I may have that at home.

I suggest you use a 12"X12" square of thin plywood, painted charcoal or flat black and mount the extingusher on that. Loosen the spare tire, lift and tuck the edge of the wood underneath the tire, and tighten down. Secure, but not permanent, and no holes.

This is great info guys, thanks. For some reason I thought the gas tank was directly under the center of the trunk, essentially under where I have the organizer. Had no idea it was under that shelf.

Thanks for all the great suggestions and Defyant for the trunk diagram.

Sarge, that's a great suggestion, but if it's safe I'm thinking about putting it just to the left of the left edge of the trunk organizer, on the shelf on that side just under the CD changer. Of course then it will be in the way for trunk stuff. I'll work something out.

Glad I asked before drilling.

This link is perfect thanks! You can click on each section of the trunk and it will even tell you which fasteners are Ok to use.

I notice that they sell a trunk pack to police, which appears to be similar to the drop in trunk organizer but has the trays side to side as opposed to front to back. The front is reinforced with kevlar to protect the gas tank in case of rear impact. Evidently laying stuff front to back can have it driven into the tank if hit from the rear hard enough. Trying to think of what I have in mine that could do that, just a 4-D cell maglite I guess.

Thanks again.

Here is a link the 2006 Police Interceptor modifier guide.pdf. Section 5 covers the trunk area.
