View Full Version : air ride compressor loud

Hey how come the Compressor for the ride height is really noisy on the Marauder,
And I can't hardley hear it, on the 2002 Marquis LSE.

As part of a service bullitein, the dealer installed some rubber insulators under the compressor.
This made hardly any difference, is was a little better but it's really loud on the Marauder.

Good question.

I always felt what is considered normal for that system on our cars is a crock of chitt.

By design they run way too often & are way too noisy IMHO.

We shouldn't be hearing that all the time ... but that just seems to be the nature of the beast.

I think I can count on (1) hand, the times the one in my 97 Town Car has come on, in the course of almost (4) years. And those few times it has come on ... it was very quiet.

I notice mine more and more often. Used to be only in cool/cold weather when first starting in the morning. It's July in FL now and it kicks in pretty frequently. I am expecting it to croak off in the not too distant future.

Mine goes on almost everytime I start the car for at least a second or two. Runs about 10 to fifteen seconds on the first morning start and raises the car about an inch...

As long as it does that for at least 10 more years I'm ok with it ;)

if the little rubber mounts are worn the compressor will progressivly get noisier and noisier.....check them...if they are too loose that is the cause...usually anyway.....also be sure it is not resting/rubbing on any parts of the frame/body.

Also of note:
There is a Marauder specific 'whistle' on the air suspension exhaust that makes a howl. It is removable and serves no other purpose than to make an eerie howl when the air susp releases excess pressure.
It's loud ON PURPOSE!!!!

Mine is about the same in the morning for the first start. Last's about 10-15 seconds as the rear end lifts. I fix on a point in the rear view mirror and watch the tail rise. Can't say that mine is really "noisy"; but I can "feel" the hum and vibration while the compressor is working. Can't say that I have ever heard it kick on again unless it has been sitting for a long time.

I noticed mine sounded a little loud so while I had the airbox out during the K&N swap, I reached down a little farther and just kind of felt around and discovered the pump was more-or-less not even bolted down.

I had the rubber grommets in there, but nuts vibrated off. They are located on the inside of the inner fender. Replaced them and things quieted down significantly.

But, it's loud(er) again so I think it's time to see if the nuts/bolts are all loosed up or missing again...

That's funny, I do the same thing, I line up one of the defroster grids on my neighbors light post and it usually moves up one line...my daughter thinks it's "cool" :D

I have heard it kick on right after taking on 2 rear passengers and at other times during some spirited driving. It does seem to me that it runs a bit much, but running is better than not in my book

Thanks for all the ideas.
I believe the MM system works properly, It's just waaay! louder than the LSE.
Probably FMC cost saving strategy.
I'm still PO'ed about my rear view mirror!

It is totaly normal for a properly functioning RAS to come on at least once per driving cycle. THe RAS system purposly vents out some air after the vehicle is shut down, and thus needs to refill it some upon start up.

First off, sorry to bring up an old post but when under hard braking, can this system cause the air bags to relieve pressure and create a loud HMMMM sound? I keep getting this. I don't think it is driveline because if it were rear gears, it would be making howling at all speeds while accelerating and deaccelerating and I don't think it is the driveshaft since I get this HMMMM sound while braking hard even from 60-65 to a full stop. When I come to a stop, if I move the shifter from D and Neutral back and forth the pitch of the HMMMM changes. Has anyone else had any similar troubles with the air system?

I did ask the dealer about this.
I believe the bulliten replaces the rubber isolators the compressor sits on.

Steven, the air springs deflating makes more like a high pitched whining like sound of the air-escaping, not a HMMMM.

The pitch may change with gear shifts if it is the pump running, as the engine has less load and thus more electrical power while in N and indling than drive. I don't think your issue is air-susp related.

You can easily rule it out, though. Turn the car on, let it pump up to normal height, then flip the air susp switch off and take it for a ride.

If the noise is still there, it is definitely not the air suspension.

I'll try that but on the Marauder, the air suspensin does make a HMMM sound when it inflates. I've heard it before. I'm not 100% sure but nothing else makes sense. I mean, if it were gears I would be hearing grinding all the time but not when I was stopped. It isn't the transmisison level being low because I had that checked and it was fine. I'll try your idea and see what happens. I'll edit this post later to reveal my findings.

The HMMMM sound is normal for inflating, you wer easking about deflating in your previous post.

If you are slamming on the brakes hard enough to cause the rear suspension to 'bounce' when it stops, the air suspension *could* kick on thinking it is sitting lower.

It is really hard to try and determine a noise over the internet, perhaps you could give a local member a ride to try and get a second first-hand opinion on it.

Bradley,

I have a spare air pump I got from Brian "Fordnut" that I can send you to try if you like.....If it works you can buy it....if not just send it back!!??;)

So is the compressor to the left of the spare tire in the turnk? I have noticed some noise at start up as well. I have been keeping the automatic climate control of trying to figure out all the new noises.

No, the compressor is under the air filter housing. The sub woofer is to the left of the spare tire in the trunk.

EDIT: Didn't notice that his post is two months old. Oh well.

You moved so many things back there that soon you will probably move your engine back there and claim to have the first rear engined Marauder.

I took mine in and complained how noisy it was...
First answer was "they are all noisy"...
I said that answer won't wash...
Sure enough they found the teck. bulletin and fixed it under warantee...:D

If your dealer replaced the rubber gromets that the compressor sits on, to remedy the noise, that was fix my dealer tried.
Still very noisy.

Remove the flat white plastic "muffler" inside the engine comaprtment. It's attached to the radiator support infront & above of the air ride compressor.
