View Full Version : Guess what is on the most stolen list!

I get this at work. From Auto Beat Daily, out of MI. ..."according to CCC Information Services Inc., a Chicago based handler of insurance claims. The country's most-frequently-stolen model last year was the 2001 BMW M Rodster. About 1 in 200 of the high-performance sports cars was stolen and never recovered, according to the CCC. Other models on the top 10 list are 2004 Mercury Marauder (third),"...
That is not what I want to hear, good thing mine stays in a grage, some help I hope. Plus I don't live a big city. I see the one guy here got his car back, that really good. Must protect the baby.

I just saw this on WGN - 9 here in Chicago. Mercury Marauder is #3. It's time to lock them up. They'll have to pry mine from my cold dead fingers :uzi: that's for sure!

Ah, the MM moved up from eighth. If they want it, they're going to get it but don't make it easy for them. Lock your car and take your keys.

The '03 is 16th,, think the perps know difference?? If so they are better than most of the general population(and a few owners!!!)

I think the top cars are based on percentage of that car on the road.
Car A:
1,000,000 made
10,000 stolen
1% stolen
Car B:
10,000 made
150 stolen
1.5%.....technically, higher % than above.
I believe that's how they calculate the top stolen cars.
I highly doubt the are more Marauders stolen than Caddillac Escalades...I see Escalades all the time and MMs hardly ever.

What I do not understand is that Lincoln-Mercury only built some 3400 of the 2004 Marauders. I've only seen 3 or 4 of the 2004's on the street over the last two years, not counting black, which is very hard to tell the difference between 2003 and 2004, unless you look inside the interior. How could enough of them be stolen to even be put on the listing, let alone move from #8 up to #3! I knew that eventually the people who steal cars for their performance appeal would get around to the Marauder. It just has so much standard high performance equipment and the all-aluminum DOHC Cobra V8 engine, out the door. Plus, you have so many Marauders that have been modified to the utmost degree. In a perverse way, I'm very flattered that our Marauders are so highly sought after cars.
*
During my last visit to my LM dealer a month ago, they were practically begging me to trade in my Marauder. They told me that they have a lot of potential Marauder buyers that come in thinking that a LM dealer would be the best place to find a used Marauder. Unfortunately that is not the case. We just have to keep our Marauders locked and do not ever leave your keys in the car, or leave the Marauder running while you run into a store, etc.
*
We have all known what a truly great car the 2003-2004 Marauder is. Now the world is finally realizing what they missed out on.

'Tis sad...The only time someone calls a Marauder a "powerful automobile", is in a report such as this. That's FUBAR.
The study is skewed, it's based on steals "per capita", meaning based on the number of models available. Geeze, there were only 11,000 Marauder made over 36 months, and that means something in the construction of the chart.
Also noted, but not in this report, is that Detroit sold the most Marauders over any other region in the country, almost 600 in 2003, and for a while, it was the darling of the drug dealers. Any car that's a favorite of that crowd, well...Let's just say they get careless (and car-less) with more frequency that your average American. Isn't the Escalade also on the list?
The report also suggests that cars are stolen for their repair parts, and our body panels retro fit to a wide variety of Panther products.
I own two Marauders, one a daily driver and I am not alarmed, when logic says I should be twice as concerned. I think not.

Nope, mine is registered as on '03 Grand Marquis (w/300 A option package) - it cost less to insure than my '90 Town Car that I got rid of! Now I just hope I don't have to replace it!

Yeah I've always wondered this as well. Not many MM were built for the 2003-2004 year, and it's not often you see one on the road.
Also, with classifieds and eBay auctions abundant with Marauders, I wonder how many are targeted each year for theft.

While I firmly believe that if a car thief really wants your car he will get it one way or another but is the anti theft device from Ford that easily beatable?
It seems that the PATS key must be easily defeated for them to steal the car.
Do the thieves just bring a new PATS module with them or what.

I also believe it is the percentage of vehicles built to the number stolen.
There were less 2004 than 2003 Marauders produced so they are higher on the most stolen list.
IMO the odds are not as bad as the look.
That doesn't mean to leave your Marauder unprotected.
A tracking device is the way to go.

only 2300 units produed in 2004, Even if 100 units were stolen over the course of 1 year, it would put it high on the stolen list.
Im willing to bet that these cars are mostly stripped and insurance jobs being done to them then they are being stolen.

2. 1998 Acura Intergra
3. 2004 Mercury Marauder
4. 1999 Acura Interga
5. 1995 Acura Integra

7. 1996 Acura Integra
8. 1999 Acura Integra
9. 2001 Acura Integra
10. 2000 Jaguar XJR
A co-worker passed this off to me today and it was from the Associated Press. The article mentioned how these cars are stolen for their engines to sell to Honda owners for the most part. I don't know if I believe it or not because Honda Civics and Toyotas were the most stolen for years and now they aren't even on the list. I know someone on here got their Marauder stolen so there you go.

Among the top 25 stolen cars in America, the 2004 Marauder is ranked #3 and the 2003 Marauder is Ranked #16. So Keep em close and don"t lose sight of them. As a retired cop I can tell you that a car thief once he has his eyes set on a target he will find clever ways to get your car. They usually know how to get their target. Be aware.

Anyone that can get into my garage in the middle of the night without waking me up can have the keys without an argument. I will even give them $50 for gas and NOT call the police. Then, when they turn the key - I will put a hollow-point through the windshield. My garage always stays closed, alarm ON and she never goes somewhere where I can't see her. Movie theaters and malls are a no-no.

Copying in my comment from Fast & Furious" thread:
Those "most stolen" and "most frequently stolen" lists have always been confusing.
National (US) average is 2.6 stolen per 1000 vehicles, per year. If Marauders were average (which they are not), that would come to about 29/year. Anti-theft devices, garaging when not in use, and lower than average mile/year would all push that down, while theft desireability would push that up. Location also matters. National average is 500 thefts per 100,000 population, but Vegas and a few other cities are up around 1300/100,000.
Cadillac Escalade 4WD, often near the top of the list for frequency, is around 10/1000, or 4X average. If Marauders are at 2X national average, or 5/1000, that means around 50/year.
Which is 50 too many. So, understand the high risk theft locations: shopping malls, movie theater complexes, and airport and communter train station parking lots.
Drive safe (and park safe) out there.
