I try to leave plenty of space, between me and the vehicle in front of me.
Especially trucks!
Keep speeds reasonable >triple digits

Oh man. :( You reminded me of a trip I mad 2 months ago...on the way back from an NVMC drag day, on Rt 70 in Maryland.
It was not too far out of Frederick, MD, and I started hearing small noises, like my car getting hit with very small rocks, or sandblasted. I couldn't see anything and there was only thing such as a Corolla or Minivan in front of me.
Then as the road straightened, I saw it - a beat up old dump truck, 1/2 mile ahead!
My car was just being pelted...the truck was going slow, so bailing out meant I'd just catchup later, so I just made my way past him.
I seem to have gotten out largely unscathed, but wow that was the worst feeling!

Me too Breadfan!,
Last year going to the Dream cruise a small boulder was bounding toward me, from a gravel truck.
We were traveling too fast to do any avoidence maneuvers.
Hit the top of the car one inch from the windshield.
Had to have the roof repaired/painted.
I got to watch the projectile bounce a few times in anticipation.

Put a few coats of a good wax in your front end.

Ever considered a bra? I got one from Ray The Dealer.
PITA to put on, but didn't flap around at 100MPH, and kept all the bugs and crap off the paint.
BTW, plenty of wax regardless. ;)
Mike.
