I read through the other recent thread on HVAC problems but didn't see anything that matched the thing that mine did this afternoon.
I am working in PA this week and I noticed as I was leaving the parking lot this afternoon that the LED display on the climate control was not on. I keep it on the outside temp function and during summer I just leave the A/C on 65 with the fan on low, so I rarely ever change the settings on it. Sometime between the time I started the car and the time I got back to the hotel I noticed the display was on again.
Is my climate control module getting ready to "***** the bed"???

The service manual shows how to run a self test check on the EATC.

Press the OFF & FLOOR buttons at the same time and release. Within TWO SECONDS press the AUTOMATIC button and release.

The display will change to the self test mode which basically is a dash symbol ( - ) that chases itself in a square rotation pattern. Any trouble codes will then appear.

To exit the self test mode just press the BLUE (cooler) button.

If you get any codes post them here and I'll look them up in the service manual for you.

Shelby,
Thanks a bunch for the info. I ran the diagnostic routine and it did the circular formation for a short while and then went into what I assume was a light check. No codes were displayed. Is this procedure for the climate system only, or does it display any stored codes from the OBDII system?

Climate control only, I had the problem with led's you describe with my CrownVic, it was under warranty and the dealer replaced the complete control unit.

.... and then went into what I assume was a light check. No codes were displayed.

Forgot about that part. Yes I came to the same conclusion that at the end it does a light/display check until you exit the test.

As smokie posted it's only for the EATC system. It would be cool if it did the OBDII codes also.

Howdy Boys.....

Well my HVAC system went wacky today and in the "Auto" mode was blowing air out the defroster for a few minutes.....the floor for a few and back to the defroster??:argue: I called my dealer who told me of the diagnostic procedure but for some reason it won't work on mine??:shake:

With it running I held the "OFF" and "FLOOR" buttons and it cut off briefly and then back on....touching the "Auto" button put it back to auto....WHAT AM I DOING WRONG??:mad2:

Damn newfangled contraptions...I want my Model A back!!

Any ideas?? BTW....after attempting the diagnostic test it seemed OK??

mine also freaked out today, i noticed after coming out of a car wash, by hand of course, that the reading for outside temp. indicated -40 degrees and it was 20 outside, in celsius of course, anyhow, the result was that it blew hot air even in max ac settings. It took about 2 hours to slowly come back to normal. Would disconnecting the battery reset everything if it does it again ?

Well....I cannot run the self test....WON'T WORK AT ALL!!:argue:

When it calls for "Max" air it blows out the defroster but comes back to the dash vents when the set temp is reached??

I guess the controler is bad....I'll check the connections and vacuum lines later??

RoyLPita can get it for ya....

When I hold the OFF and FLOOR buttons it turns off and back on then seems to function OK??

I took the controller out and all seems to be hooked up!!:o

I guess I'll see if my dealer will order one for me...under warranty....until November!!:bows:

I had the same freaky thing with a/c blowing out the floor / defroster. The diagnostic check on the unit gave me no errors. I just installed a used a/c control unit from a member and it solved all the problems.

These things seem to be problematical. I have noticed they get hot to the touch when on for a while. My crackpot theory is that the heat eventually kills the electronics.

My gut feeling is "Made In Mexico" has something to do with it!!
