First, let me say up front, this is NOT about Ray. He has been above board, and is a real asset to this community.
That said, anyone else have experience with dealers selling parts _above_ MSRP?
I went to my local dealer, Sunset Ford, yesterday, to get parts and supplies to service my MM's transmission.
I've been buying parts there for many years, and in the past, they have usually treated me pretty well.
This trip, they gave me a 20% discount on my order.
Or so I thought.
When I got home and looked again at the bill, it didnt' look like they treated me so well. So, I went to genuine-ford-parts (http://www.genuine-ford-parts.com/),
and ran the numbers. To my surprise, I found that Sunset Ford's list prices, as shown on the parts invoice, were some
20% or more above the MSRPs shown at G-F-P.
Trans filter, F6AZ-7A098-A MSRP $31.11, Sunset Ford's list price $37.70
TFT Sensor, F8AZ-7G276-BA MSRP $27.13, Sunset Ford's list price $32.56
EPC Solenoid, XL3Z-7G383-AB MSRP $70.10, Sunset Ford's list price $ 84.12
Fuel Filter, F89Z-9155-A MSRP $17.67, Sunset Ford's list price $21.20
Mercon V, XT-5-QM MSRP $4.17, Sunset Ford's list price $6.00.
Now, I know that dealers are free to set their pricing however they wish, but claiming to knock 20% off list, after first
jacking the list price up by 20% or more, just doesn't seem right.
So since I wasn't, here's a word to the wise. Run your part numbers on one of the online Ford parts sites, and make
sure your dealer (again, not Ray) is giving you the square deal. There are several of these sites that Ford dealers
use to sell over the web. As far as I can tell, they all report the same MSRPs.
Sure wish we had a "Ray" out here on the Left Coast...

My local Ford dealer, who USED to give me a decent discount on parts, recently fired the parts guy and is now boning everyone. Case in point, the axle TSB kit...MSRP of $336.05...they wanted $383.10 for it. I told them I didn't mind paying MSRP, but not $50 MORE. They told me they didn't care that I was a long-time customer; no more discount. I told them to step off.
Next time I'm in the market for a Ford, it won't be purchased there.

Appreciate it.

Very common for for dealers to mark up 10-20%.
============================== ====
Best way to buy parts in to do it Online.
Tasca.com and http://www.fordparts.com/tousleyford have same cheapest prices, but Tousley has faster and cheaper shipping.
Shipping are charges offset by not paying any sales tax.
F6AZ-7A098-A $19.40
F8AZ-7G276-BA $30.59
XL3Z-7G383-AB $62.55
F89Z-9155-A $8.86

Dealers do a 300% mark up on anything they sell. I worked at a dealer who has a parts counter with like 3 million parts stocked daily. They have a sheet of what stuff costs so they know what to charge employees. We would pay list price plus 10%. Toyota water pumps are some $68 or something and they charge about 240. If you ever have your car in for service just complain and complain about the cost and they will lower it. Also depending how big of a part you need you can send me a pm and I can have the guys I used to work with order it for me and then the same rules would apply. List price plus 10% and pa sales tax. Id need cash in order to get that deal though but it works with all dealers in the area

Living in the Texas hill country in weather days like yesterday, today, and the rest of the week in December...seems like being in God's country...BUT...only one Ford dealer in San Marcos (16 miles away). Yes there are zillions in Austin and San Antonio...one in New Braunfels as well...but a longer trip.
So far though...Griffith Ford/Mercury's (still listed that way) parts guys in San Marcos have been helpful and cooperative...and the prices on what little stuff I have bought there in the last two years have been about what I find elsewhere...
but again...some really useful information here on the website for all of us out there.
Yup you have to call around. There are two local Ford dealers just a few miles away that even share a part of their name as one is owned by the son of the person that started the other one. The older dealer sells parts at 18% off of true Ford list to over the counter customers. The other will charge over list to over the counter customers and their "wholesale" discount will get you parts at list price. Years ago my brother in law needed a power window switch for his truck and was going to go to the wrecking yard that wasn't close since they "only" wanted $20 I said why are you going to pay new prices for a used part. He said he called the dealer and the new one was near $35. I told him the right dealer to call and it was $21.

I'm a parts mgr at some Ford dealer in OK...anyway it's called MATRIX and everybody and every manufacturer does it from VW to Volvo. This matrix system inflates the MSRP into a brand new "retail" and some accounts are given a discount off that, even though after discount they may still be paying close to MSRP. If you don't know the part #'s and MSRP of the parts you are buying upfront get a price quote and come back if they pricing is fair after you have gone online and verified the numbers

My shop buys a lot of parts from dealers, everything from Ford to Mercedes.
I use the Alldata system to give me the part # and retail price and expect to get at least 20% off. I will regularly call them out on prices if they start that Matrix **** with me. I get the parts manager to adjust the price back down to where it should be. Most of the dealers I deal with know better, but they do still try to slip it to me. I have to check every part price with some of them.
The few times they don't make it back down to normal pricing I either go to their competitor or I have to pas it along to the customer.

6 year rest. Wow what a bump, and the bump didn't make a word of sense either.
