If I remember correctly, that's a rich-reading O2 sensor, bank #1.
For what it's worth, if you bought a Diablo Predator, it would tell you what the codes mean.

You can look up the trouble code descriptions at:
http://www.obdii.com/codes.html
More useful will be a web search on the code itself. A quick search yielded this:
http://www.v8sho.com/SHO/TSB0197HO2SServiceTips.htm
(find PO172 in there and you'll find some possible causes)
Did you change anything just before it started throwing the code? What are your fuel trims sitting at? It may be as simple as the MAF needing to be cleaned.

I have had this code come up in the van...
Cleaning the throttle body/intake cleared it
for three months now!!

Now both banks are too rich.

yes that is both banks rich. very well could be a bad mass air flow senser.....or high fuel pressure......id love to see what the baro reading is...thatll tell you if its the maf or not.....

and if it was the maf that needed to be cleaned..... it would have lean codes.....most likely.

would a exhaust leak by the manifold at collector cause these codes note i have thought to heard a very slight leak on left side. but it is now setting codes for both banks. i dont know or have a way to check maf/ baro reading. i may have to take to dealer. would i need to put stock tune back in car first before taking to a dealer????/ thanks for all the help
