Just wondering how many of you don't carry a spare tire. Was it the full size or the space saver. Do you carry a can of Fix-A-Flat etc.

At lunch today I did some weighing.

Full size spare tire: 48.5 lbs
Jack & lug wrench: 10 lbs
Spare tire cover: 0.5 lbs
Trunk organizer: 25 lbs
Total: 84 lbs

So does it make sense to go without a spare tire and the trunk organizer to gain a slight amount of performance and increased gas mileage? Besides going on a diet, does anyone know of any other weight savings?

The new Shelby Mustang GT-500 does not have a spare tire. What it does have is a compressor and a way to plug the tire. (Don't know if it is a liquid goop or if it is a plug). The compressor takes up about a third of the room in the tire well. Was told it was to save weight.

My daughters RX8 doesn't have a spare, just a car of fix-a-flat. The Chrysler Crossfire doesn't have a spare either.

You could use a mini-skirt spare tire cover like Defyant to save some weight.

I have the donut although now that I'm thinking about it I would never put that on my car. I would just call triple a. Anyone got a full size they would part with? Now that I would carry like I did in the 300A

I'm using the MM for a family vacation to the beach next week. I've decided to ditch the donut spare to get more usable room to get in all the beach crap. I'm a little uneasy but the chances of a problem are very low. I will bring a compressor to handle a slow leak problem if it occurs. I hope I'm not tempting fate. It's not that the spare is large, it's just that the way it sits in there really causes a waste of space when you need it all.

After reading your replys, I think I'm going to ditch the spare and just carry a can of Fix-A-Flat & a plug kit to handle any small punctures.

I will always have a full size spare in any of my cars. I have a bent but stock MM rim with a 300C size 225/60-18 tire + an aftermarket jack. I also carry tire plugs w/ tools, an air compressor and a 4 lug wrench.

You could not pay me any large amount of $$$$$ to use "Fix a Flat". That Goopy crap throws off the tire balance and is a mess to clean out of the tire.

I weighed my car today. 4130 lbs with a 1/2 tank of gas. If you recall I removed the spare tire, jack & lug wrench and trunk organizer.

Any other ideas on weight saving ideas? Are the Optima batteries lighter than the standard lead acid batteries?

Now that's funny (if you are joking).

I wouldn't be caught dead without a spare. Part of my seasonal maintenance is to check the air pressure in my spare.

Imagine a sidwall split. Nothing short of a new tire is going to fix that.

I have replaced my 'mini' with a fulll sized spare.

I couldn't imagine my car being towed due to a flat tire. Nor could I just leave it on the side of the road.

We must all make sacrifices....

I wouldn't be caught dead without a spare.

I'm a police officer, and every day I stop to help about five or six people with flat tires. They always seems surprised, like, "Wow! I haven't had a flat tire in ten years!"

A lot of them are traveling from out of state.

Trust me, if you want to be a sitting duck on the side of the road - at the mercy of the nearest wrecker service and grease monkey tire shop, which will probably NOT have a suitable replacement tire for your Marauder - then feel free to trust your (mostly useless) can of Fix-a-Flat.

As for me, I'll keep my spare and all of my assorted flares, tools, gloves, air compressor, etc.

Saving 100 pounds on a 4,100 pound car is almost laughable. I'll bet $50 that 100 pounds won't make a significant or measurable difference in performance or fuel economy. I suppose it would be different if you were at the track, seeking every last opportunity to increase your power/weight ratio.

Costco won't repair a tire that has had fix a flat in it. Besides, that never works anyway.

Matter a fact...I need two ( 2 ) spare tire rims. You know, the full size rim thats in the 300a's...want to put old rears on them for burnout competition...

My car always seems to run better times with the full size spare, trunk organizer and a full tank of gas. I really have no clue why it would run faster with 150 extra pounds... maybe because of the street tires.

My SSR didn't have a spare... or jack or lug wrench. Like the Shelby, it had a compressor and some gunk to shoot into the tire to plug the hole. Not real effective against a blowout. There wasn't room for a spare, btw, not to mention the rear wheels were 20" and 10" wide, the fronts were 19"
