View Full Version : Console part needed

Please bear with me if this post gets confusing. :rasta:
I need to know, from someone with access to the Ford parts manuals, whether the power point socket inside the console storage bin is available separately. The plastic "housing" that the power point sits in is detachable from the rest of the storage bin, so hopefully that small assembly (socket and housing) is available.
The socket itself is defective and won't pass power. I tried to substitute the cigarette lighter socket, but they're not the same outside diameter. I also tried swapping out the guts from one socket to the other, but the plugs have different keying and won't mate. Argh. Stupid Ford.
Alternate solution: is someone who removed the cigarette lighter to install a 3rd gauge willing to part with the lighter's power plug from behind the gauge pod? Unfortunately, I discarded that plug way back when the 3rd gauge was installed.
Thanks everyone...

Just a thought, and I'm too lazy to go check, but did you check the socket with the key on?
Some cars are set up so the power point is only hot when the ingition is on.
Cigarette lighter - hot all the time, power point - ignition must be on??
If you don't get the info before Monday, I can try to look it up when I'm back at work.
Good luck.

Both are hot all the time. Any parts store sells universal lighter sockets that are 7/8" in diameter which is the diameter of the hole in the console. Buy one and install it in the existing hole - or remove the console and check the wiring.

I agree with the above post.
The cig lighter plug is a little different though, it is ceramic (because of the heat) vs the regular plastic on the power point.
Also, do the Marauders have a power point under the RH dash like earlier Marquises? If so you can use that socket/plug as well. The socket inside my Continental console is indentical to the one I had on the floor, and IIRC the actual storage bin itself is the same, LX SPort/LSE/COntinental, jsut the lids are different, so you could even pick up a more easily found continental piece as well.

You may have to crimp some solderless connectors on the existing wires to mate tot he 'generic' power plug, but it's an easy job. Just keep your +/- correct. Center is positive-jacket negative.

I was hoping to avoid generic/Radio Shack/ghetto engineering. I'll do that if it's the only practical solution, but would prefer the proper parts.
I know it's the socket, not the wiring. The socket melted, probably when I last used my small compressor/tire-inflator, and now won't pass power from the plug.
Marauderjack: PM received and replied to...thanks!

I got the piece of trim that goes under the glove box in the 2003GM. That is where the power point was.... I plan on relocating my plug to that location.
I have installed the third gauge....
