View Full Version : Is there an impact lock on the front seat belts?

I bought a set of used seat belts and the front retractors don't extend out. There is some device on the side of the retractor that has a yellow connector which I assume is part of the passive safety system.
If a car is hit and the impact sensors are triggered, is there a mechanism that locks the front retractor mechanisms? Has any one played with this?
It looks like the device is removeable and could be swapped out.
Thanks,
Tom

The seat belts on both of my Marauders do lock in place under hard braking. How, or, "why" I don't know, but they autolock.

BTW, if you have a moon roof, and the visor is open, lay on the brakes hard enough and it closes on it's own!
Ask me how I know.

I believe the MM's have an "intertia" lock. You have to be generating hard/fast forward motion to get the belts to lock.

Just so everyone understands, this is a seat belt mechanism I am holding in my hand. It is not in the vehicle, and I cannot move it out more than an inch or so, regardless of how slowly I pull it out.

I've done that one a few times:cool:
Our cars have a small explosive device (Called a Pre-tensioner) on both front seat belt retractors. It is designed to lock the belt in the case of an airbag deployment. It inhibits forward movement of the front passengers at the time of deployment, thus reducing injury from the bag itself. I'm not sure if the pre-tensioner can be replaced on these units or if you have to replace the entire belt assembly. I believe it's the latter and for you, if you purchased them, it sucks!
Best luck,

I don't knoiw about younz but..... ummm..... I wouldn't trust a used seat belt. That's just me.

That is what I wanted to confirm.
It appears the "Pre-tensioner" can be removed and replaced, so I'm not worried about them being deployed. My purpose is to create a complete interior parts set in Dark Charcoal to swap with someone that has Light Flint. They can attach their undeployed Pre-tensioners to the retractor mechanisms or if they don't like the old belts, they can buy new, but I'm sure the cost would be rather high.
Thanks,

Granted the cost would be rather high to replace with brand new seat belts. But life is too precious to be playing around with used seat belts. Don't know if the old ones were stretched or not. They may look fine.... but not for this white boy. I'll get off my soap box now.

After a $17K, all 4 bag deployment wreck, I needed no service on the belts. Ford called for no service on the belts. They still operate and inertia lock properly.
It may sound silly, but tip the seat belt mechanism backwards slightly to overcome the inertia lock. I had this issue in a Caravan I was working on.
It is my opinion that if the inertia lock and airbags operate you are golden.
Just my experience FWIW.

I have experienced the moon roof shade closing on me during hard braking as well...
But its when the moon roof shade OPENS during boosted acceleration that I get the biggest smile to my face....
