View Full Version : YO! Wake Up And Get Ready!
As you awake this morning, the National Weather Service and NOAA have drastically changed the projected path of Hurricane Ernesto. (See Below). This could have errors, of course, but that may put it on S.E. FL Wednesday morning. If the track holds until Thursday, S.W. FL better watch out (Does Charlie come to mind?). If the track holds beyond that, the Bay Area may be in for a lickin' like we haven't seen in years! Today (Sunday), would be a good day to do all that preliminary, preparatory stuff like take in loose objects from the yard, uncover the shutters, WD-40 the fasteners, etc. Water and non-perishables in the stores might be scarce by tomorrow. Gas up and hit the ATM up for cash before the storm.
I'm not "crying Wolf", just want everybody to be aware of whats going on out there before the work week begins. I know some Sundays, I choose to laze-away and never turn on the news or pick up a paper (Today's paper won't mention this by the way.). So wake up and get ready!
With best wishes for everybody,
J

The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale is a 1-5 rating based on the hurricane's present intensity. This is used to give an estimate of the potential property damage and flooding expected along the coast from a hurricane landfall. Wind speed is the determining factor in the scale, as storm surge values are highly dependent on the slope of the continental shelf and the shape of the coastline, in the landfall region. Note that all winds are using the U.S. 1-minute average.
Category One Hurricane:
Winds 74-95 mph (64-82 kt or 119-153 km/hr). Storm surge generally 4-5 ft above normal. No real damage to building structures. Damage primarily to unanchored mobile homes, shrubbery, and trees. Some damage to poorly constructed signs. Also, some coastal road flooding and minor pier damage. Hurricane Lili of 2002 made landfall on the Louisiana coast as a Category One hurricane. Hurricane Gaston of 2004 was a Category One hurricane that made landfall along the central South Carolina coast.
Go back to sleep, and stop watching the Hysteria Channel.

It's always good to be carefull when a storm can be in your area. Just don't wait to the last minute like most people do.

I remember a little category 1 hurricane called Andrew back in 1992. Just east of the Bahama's, it wasn't much of a storm; small and not very strong. 12 hours later, it hit Miami as the strongest and costliest category 5 hurricane to ever hit the USA.
Never take these things for granted.

yeah as a midwesterner I remember watching lots of people laughing at Katrina. I love FLorida, even have family there, not sure I'd want to move there for this concern alone. Up here I tell everyone, a tornado watch doesn't become a warning until a funnel cloud is seen. Folks laugh at me but one day we will get one very close to Chicago again.

The weather channel forcasts the center of the cone to hit or near the west coast of florida with a chance of it turning toward the east even more. I went to SuperMarket around 11 am to get some milk and some Onion's for the Skirt Steaks I'm going to grill today and couldn't even get a parking spot. It seams people just get too neverous over here every time they hear of a storm.

But, don't listen to me. Get out there and board up your windows! Go buy every drop of gasoline you can! Take in all the lawn furniture! Cut down all the trees on your property! Bottled water! Batteries! Canned food!! Hurry-this may be the end!!!

Many Hurricanes gain strength when touching the warm waters South of Florida.
There is still a potential so everyone remain focused.

No doubt. And I'm ready for one. I've got a newer hacienda with a hip roof, hurricane braces, and a generator big enough to run the whole house [and enough fuel for over a week]. Please don't think I don't take these things seriously.
My problem is when people "hype" up a storm when they have no idea where it's going, when it'll get there, or how bad it'll be. Too many people watching the Hysteria Channel.

That's funny, because I went and got gas last night and there was no problem and no line. That's even with primium at $3.07 at BP.

It has a good chance of being a cat 1. Even though that seems tame compared to what we are used to, there will still be lots of power outages and we all know how that sucks. The power grid is still not 100%. Lots of temp repairs and crappy poles left out there and still lots of stuff growing near the lines.
I hope the lines at the liquor store aren't ridiculous, I need to stock up for the storm party!

On the way home from work I stopped to get gas and waited 45 minutes. Most of the gas stations around me are empty cuz they have no more gas available. I spoke to my Father In Law and he said that all thew gas stations in Palm Beach are sold out as well......Lines at the pumps, Grocery Stores, Road Rage and traffic jams out the wazzzzu....Brings back some painfull memories of the last storm we had.
It looks like I will be working storm duty after all is said and done

X 2. And as I recall, Katrina wasn't much either until it got into the Gulf.
One big thing that does bother me---well, a little bit, anyway: I keep thinking about the Coasties down in that area. I myself have had to do hurricane duty twice during the time I was stationed in Miami. Once we couldn't do anything about---Hortense, back in 1996. She came in from the Gulf side and chewed her way across the state, going back out to sea at Jax...right when we were there doing REFTRA with the Navy. I still have some vivid memories of being nearly blown off the flying bridge...
The second one was an emergency evac from Miami in the fall of 1998, when we thought Mitch was gonna come in...I spent 4 days doing circles off the west coast of Cuba until Mitch got done trashing the Keys. We ended up going back through the tail of the storm...looked like the closing scenes from the movie "The Perfect Storm".
Coasties are generally smart about these things...we're not gonna stand there and try to go head-to-head with a hurricane; we'll move aside, let it blow through, and come back to do damage control afterwards. Still, the guys at Stations Key West, Islamorada, Marathon, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Naples, Cortez, St. Petersburg, and Yankeetown...they're gonna have their hands full. And if this thing crosses the state from west to east, then the folks at Jax, New Smyrna Beach, and Canaveral are gonna have a rough couple of days. New Smyrna in particular gets it pretty bad...the roads there are so low-lying that the station becomes cut off even during a mere hard rain.
Those of you with boats, put on your storm moorings---tie those suckers down to the point where they don't move, PERIOD. If you can, get 'em outta the water altogether.
I'm a little worried about my mom too...she's right there in Tampa, a scant few miles from MacDill's main gate. But I know her; she's already got a bag packed and is ready to go spend a couple of days in either Tallahassee or Orlando, depending on which way this thing goes...
You guys take care out there, alright?:alone:

The 5pm NOA track heads it straight up the east coast of FL as a tropical storm, lotsa rain for us, but watch out NC and SC! It could be a hurricane by the weekend for y'all.
