Pulled into the Sunoco
Pumped in 10.12 gallons of 94 ULTRA
Drove 1.2 miles...
car sputters belches.... dies
lucky for me I can coast into a friends driveway.
starts runs like doogy doo and dies.
Call AAA get a tow to my LM dealer
Flat bed drivers says" You just fill up at the Sunoco?"
"yep.""Every time it rains I'm towing people off Pricetown road about a mile from there, after they fill up." " Had 5 the week of the lsat rain, a Porsche, a Lexus and other high end cars." "I wouldn't get gas there if I were you."

Dealer called, they pulled a gallon of fuel for a sample... 3/4 water 1/4 gas.
They looked at the pump and sock .... blech... need to replace it.

Eesh! At least it looks like you escaped any permanent injury.

At least you were smart enough to handle the situation properly. :)

The owner of the station has yet to return my calls, but Sunoco Customer/Relations has a report filed and an insurance claim is started. I'll get them a copy of the bill when I get it.

EVERYONE SHOULD ALWAYS KEEP THE RECIEPT FROM THE PUMP.
I got mine.... it's GOLD, Jerry, GOLD!

I suspect that the Sunoco dealer has no idea that rain water was getting into his tank. :dunno: Would have been nice if the owner of the "Roll Back" towing company notified the gas station of a potential problem. Of course, that may have cut into their business. It's good that he mentioned it to you so that someone can now address the water-gas problem. They must have alot of water in the tank if you were sucking it 3 gas to 1 water -- or the tank is pretty low.

Da water would be in the bottom of the Sunoco tank and would get pumped into a few cars right after the rain runoff and then as the pickup is near the bottom in ground..all would be good... I bet the fill spout for the inground tank has a broken cover and the ground water pours in....You call the town inspection department to have their gas tested right after the rain...they should do it..

Perhaps, he know s now though.
I can't imagine that the other cars that were picked up just let it slide.

There's a Quick Trip around here that got a load of diesel dumped in it's regular unleaded tank. A guy I work with said his wife filled up there and didn't make it a mile before her minivan started choking pretty bad.

Quick Trip's big thing around here is "Guaranteed Gasoline" and I guess they did right for the people that got dosed. From what I understand, they set up a response team at a near by Firestone dealer where they drained the tanks and flushed the fuel lines on 50 cars or so. From what I heard, no one noticed it until a guy filling a gas can for his mower got a whiff of the diesel and new something wasn't right.

The carrier probably took it in the shorts on that one. I would have figured by design of the hose connection someone couldn't make that error but I guess not.

Sorry to hear of this Rich...good thing you knew what to do. If you don't hear back from the station owner...I say you stake out the place....

<DT>"When you're on a stakeout, do you find it's better to stand up against the wall, or kinda crouch down behind a big plant?" <DD>- Jerry, in "The Stakeout"</DD>

I worked a lot of filling stations in my younger days, and EVERY single one checked for water in the tanks daily. It's easy, just smear this gooon the measuring stick, and it changes color if water is present. I believe it is a franchise requirement from the suppliers. Now not every station did anything about the water when found, but they all knew. Sounds like Sunoco is willing to do right by you though, have a thourough check done and do any repairs on their ticket.

You made it 1.2 miles...?
Tough Marauder!

I did it. At a Marathon here on the west side of Cleveland. Came in on fumes, filled up, started the car...made 35 FEET!!!

DEAD. In the water, as they say.

Got towed to the dealer, where they pumped her stomach and found 3 quarts of water in 8 gallons.

The Marathon main office paid my tow and repair bill, and sent me a bunch of gas coupons with a written apology.

OK, got the bill:
Drained, flushed cleaned poked prodded, new pump , filter, sock
injectore flushed and cleaned.

$1247.47
Now THAT is expensive gas!!!

So far it's looking positive for reimbursement. I'll let you know.

Oh... it was just the Ultra tank... they tested them all yesterday.

Oh my !!! Was the fuel pump the biggest ticket item or was it just all the labor that was involved. That seems incredible. :(

 Multiply that by the number of vehicles effected and the replacement of the contaminated fuel, the down time to repair the tanks or tanks, etc. and the fact that lost business from Rich and the others that will not be back and that dealer is in a world of hurt. We trust that it is ok when we stick the nozzle in???? we have had to many bad gas posts to be comfortable. Bad enough to be concerned with the cost without having to wonder what the hell is coming out of the pump. Dennis:(
