View Full Version : Running RR off the ground? Did I screw up?

Can't leave well enough alone I guess. Wanted to hear the new bearing / axle in action and make sure there was no longer any sounds coming from back there, so lifted the RR wheel 2" off the ground, chocked up the front wheels, fired it up and put it in Drive. The wheel spun of course, but every few revolutions there would be a distinct gentle "thump" from the rear end and I could feel the car jump a bit. Ran it that way for maybe 10 seconds, and then freaked out and put it back on the ground.

Drove it out and about at various speeds hard for 10 miles and all seems fine.

Anyone know what that thumping was? Why wouldn't the wheel just spin silently?

Hope I didn't do something really dumba$$ and screw up my gears.

Thanks again,

Norm

Sounds like your limited slip was barking at you.

Norm, NEVER run a car with a limited-slip (posi) rear end with only one wheel off the ground. It's dangerous, as the car can move unexpectedly. The whole purpose of limited slip is to provide power to the wheel with the most traction, in this case the one still on the ground. It's fortunate you thought to chock the front wheels...

So to answer your question, no you didn't hurt anything; the thumping you heard was, as HwyCruiser said, the limited slip clutches doing their job.

It even says it in the owner's manual. Don't do that again!!!! It might just save your life and the others around you.

scary...y'all be careful out there. No need to run the car in gear on jack stands to check the rear. Most rear axle conditions can be diagnosed with a road test or jacked up in neutral, engine off.

Doh! :o:o:o:stupid:

What can I say. Stupid is as stupid does. I should have known all this. So if _both_ wheels were up then only one would have spun? I guess I just assumed that with one wheel up the other wouldn't do anything.

I'm glad you guys think that I didn't fry anything.

Geez, I guess this would explain why the front chocks were totally jammed. Duh.

Alright, alright, I AM a dumba$$! Thanks for taking it easy on me, and let's just forget the whole thing OK?

(Actually, this wasn't me, but a friend that did this, and I was just asking for him; yeah, that's right! A friend...) :shake:
