View Full Version : Break in period is how long?

I mentioned so many things about when to bolt on a supercharger, but what about just the new engine itself? Should I wait as long as 6,000 miles before a 1320 run or is it okay at 500 miles? I know there is a break in period, but I don't know what it is and if it's anything special for our cars/engines. Any idea?

Go easy for 500 miles, then be yourself.

I have heard to take it easy for the first 500 miles. Then change the oil.

For the next 1000 miles, play a little (but not too much :D). Then change the oil.

After that... have fun! :D

It will be broken in by the time you pick it up.

Makes perfect sense to me... keep water at hand, use nothing but gas, avoid telephone poles and Zack will break in my car! Sounds like good advice thank you! :D

And don't leave black marks on the pavement in front of chicken joints when there are firemen around:coolman:

Are you suggesting it may put itself out of its OWN misery. :baaa:

My final answer.

500 miles? Its not a flat tappet cam. I've helped build a few 2v and 4v motors that were ran on the dyno that day or ran out at the track.

Put it together, drive it a bit (day or so), change the oil and filter, let it rip!! If its an engine thats had any kind of machine work such as a stroker or overbore its best to run oil for about 10 minutes of idle, Change, then 50 miles change, then 500 miles change, then rip into it. 10 minute idle oil looked almost like mystic paint when I started my 347 for the first time.

My Marauder was broken in on the way from the dealer to my home.
