So here I am at the local Hollman Lincoln Mercury dealership getting a new set of KDW2s balanced a mounted. I'm walking through the showroom and I see a guy about two years younger than me walking around in a frenzy with spiky hair. Anyway, I go back to the service manager's office and I find that same guy there with a huge printed recall list. Appearently the poor bastard has a 01 Mercury Cougar V6 manual and had a complete shut down on the highway.

He claims that his alternator failed which led to an ABS module to lock up and almost spun out on I75. I feel sorry for this guy and the service manager, who shall remain nameless, was doing his best to calm this guy down. BTW, he was talkin to the same service guy I always go to. He was ranting a yelling saying the dealership should pay for the towing and everything and that they have to do to it and have to fix a laundry list of recalls for free. At first I felt really bad for the guy since he had soo many troubles and my car was just sitting there right out side the building and I told him about it and that I had no problems. Turns out the guy has 80,000+ miles on his car which means that it is way out of warranty. He said he had a ton of other problems on it too! He also said something about the fuel filter needing to be replaced because it runs right over the brake lines... I don't know.

He said the shifter knob is shot and he can't find a replacement knob and now he has to buy an all new gear shifter linkage... Something like that. Anyway, he said the car was more reliable than his 80's Jeep Cherroke. Anyway turns out the guy that does test drives and work for warranty work was out on vacation and they had him call up and pay for towing and that he has to settle the issue with Corporate Ford. I think he's screwed because he's soo far out of warranty but eh... Anyway, the KDW2s run nice but the delear only put 32 psi in them when I asked for 35, no bigge. Everything else is great. Too bad for the guy with the Cougar though. He said he's apart of a huge South Florida Cougar club and meets at the Tower Shopps so maybe I'll see him again when it is all fixed.

Dang, my son the S.O.B. has an '01 Mercury Cougar V6. His is an automatic though. Have not seen any recalls or notices on this alternator problem.

Sometimes it goes that way. My sister and I both had Grand Am GT's, I had an '01, she had an '02. Mine was traded in with 90,000 miles and hardly any issues.

Her's was traded in at 48,000 with two lower intake gasket replacements, leaking (cracked) radiator, multiple instances of PASSlock failures, oh and a dent but that wasn't Pontiac's fault. :)

Still, nearly identical cars, completely different stories.

Then again, one was always clean, one wasn't...wonder if something like that had anything to do with it.

That's what happens when Ford slaps the Cougar name on some lil' go-cart sized puddle jumper feces box.

Oh yeah, one last thing I forgot to mention in the story. Appearently it was involved in a minor accident too. He ran into the back of a 4Runner and damaged the hood. Something doesn't sound right about his story but I hope his car gets back on the road.

Maybe he pushed the hood down and shorted it on the battery? Damaged the electrical system perhaps...

Yeah it was kinda sad but funny all at once. He had ten pages of internet material, half of it from consumer reports and the service manager just goes "It doesn't matter what thoose consumer reports and automtive reports say you have to take the issue up with corporate"... Then he just goes on to blame the engineers and stuff at Ford. I mean, it sounds like he has a lemon but I don't think he's telling the full truth either.

If all his issues were recalls it wouldnt matter if he was under warranty a recall gets replaced regardless correct? Also if it's a recall they usually send a notice to all owners which means why did he wait till he almost spun out to get the recall done?

I honestly don't know and that's exactly what I was thinking 302, why wait so long and for something to break? Like I said, I don't think he was telling the whole truth. I felt bad for him that it happened and such but oh well. I think he still has a lot of explaining to do.
