View Full Version : Was Pulled over for loud Mufflers...

This evening I was travelling on route 6 westbound over bear mountain going home after doing a 4X1 tour.
The posted speed limit on this route is 50 MPH. with a small car in front of me and this being a 2-lane road , I was in no rush. as Im driving I notice a white 4D CV pulled off in the grass facing the east bound traffic.
I have seen this tactic before , when a vehicle is travelling eastbound over the speed limit , he turns his radar on when your about 15 to 20 feet before passing his vehicle.
Myself and the car in front were within the limit so there was no concern. more than a half a mile later , the white CV rolls up and starts to follow me for about 10 seconds and then turns on his roof lights.
I pull over and to show him that I want him to be at ease , I turn on my interior lights so as to show him that I was by myself.
The LEO that stoped me was a NYS Park Police Sergeant and said to me " Your Mufflers are too LOUD " . " are your mufflers BROKEN "  .
I asked him , your pulling me over because my mufflers are loud???
Folks this is the scene- 1:30 AM , driving at around 45-50 MPH , on a mountain road , no homes on bear mountains , no complaints from motorist about loud cars , no one around except the deers and the chipmunks.
He thens wants my license , reg and insurance card to write me a summon for LOUD muffler. Sir I have never been stopped for a Loud muffler and I have driven through here several hundred times with NYS Police and State Park Police on the side of the road and my mufflers were never an issue. " Well they are loud , I don,t like them , and your going to get a summons!!! "
This S.P.P. sgt must have been bored trying to go after speeders and couldn,t find any so he decided to go after me since the deers were complaining that my car was too loud at 50 MPH and that they can here me comming.
It was time to show him a surprise of my own. I also I.D. myself as a LEO. the sgt looked at me with a dumbfounded look in his face and walked back to his car , got in and made a U Turn back down the road and my guest is that he is going to go after speeders again.
Folks Im not one to tell my driving stories on the board but this was something I wanted to share here and not because Im a LEO but I know that this sgt went overboard with his statement that my car was Loud at 50 MPH. I have no headers on my ride , just the cobra exhaust , X-pipe , and Magnaflow Mufflers with the original meg tips.
This sgt had no sound meter to measure my decibel reading and U wonder why??? Because he doesn,t have one. if this was joe citizen driving with this same senario , he would have issued the summons.
I don,t believe that the NYS Park Police has a monthly summons Quota but tonights episode was one for the books and Im sure that this sgt one day will see me again and will think again before trying to con me with a summons for a loud muffler.
NOTE: For the record , I was not confrontational with the sgt. this was a conversation with respect to him and the uniform. the uniform gets full respect when pulled over , after all a driver knows who he is , but the uniformed officer doesn,t know who you are so please courtesty when stoped by a uniformed LEO.

Hmmm...I have the DR Cobra exhaust with Magnaflow 18 mufflers on my #3 MM too, no delete tips. It's louder than stock, but no where near "loud" IMHO. My #1x and Zack's MMs are very much louder.
Guess it's all "in the opinion" of the officer.

Working mids can be seriously boring as any LEO can attest. I peraonlly hated mids after 4 AM. But he must have been having an exceptionally boring shift that early.

I got pulled over for no mufflers in my CV. I was just honest with the officer and told him I wanted to hear what it sounded like before I put the next set on which "should arrive tomorrow" he let me go, no written warning or anything. Pure luck that night...

I drove muffler-free for six or eight months with no hassles from PDs. Mostly around Orlando, but also a trip to Miami during that time.

He shoulda thrown the book at you and locked your illegal butt up!
The nerve of you disturbing his peaceful evening of watching the deer and raccons play in the moonlight!
You insensitive bastard! Trees were growing right before his eyes, then your loud "silverstreak" shut it all down.
The shame. The SHAME!
:D :D :D :D :D :D
It was a boring shift. The officer just wanted to know who was driviving the "MM", otherwise good to hear that you had the upmost respect for the law. "Good Citzen".

I've posted this statement before, Us Leo's don't last long after retirement. That exchange you guys had was too long. I would have ID myself right away and apologized for what ever he thought I did and on my way. No stress for him and No stress for me.

Wow Adrian, After being behind your car at crusing speeds, I really thought your exhaust was quieter then mine!
Obviously nothing better to do on his part.
you should have gone WOT when pulling away and really show him loud exhaust.

Gee...for those of you who have heard my MM....I'm sure he wouldn't have liked mine for sure........cause several who have --have said there hear me before they see me-----and while in traffic---they can tell when to hit the gas cause they hear my roar ...even 3-4 cars back.........
All I have is the shorty headers, cats, x-pipe-, magnaflow mufflers, straight 2 1/2 pipes back to the 3 inch deleted tips....make for a very nice Adult Muscle Car sound!............

Is the "adult" muscle car sound something suitable for younger listeners, or do we need to censor it?
Just wondering what types of sounds are coming from the back (seat) of the car.

Here's the written word for Cajun's: Revised Statute 32:353 Modification of exhaust systems.
"No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of such vehicle,
above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle and the original muffler shall comply with all the requirements of R.S. 31.352".
Acts 1962.No310, Section 1.
I asked my daughter, LEO with the city, how she "enforces" this law. She said "daddy, I have more important crimes to attend to than spend any time writting tickets for fart cans". "These people usually committ a greater crime that brings them to my attention, racing, reckless driving, DUI and so on".

Actually.. the "adult" meant "responsible" in my thinking when speaking of the sound this car makes now-----cause my thinking is younger drivers would likely exploit the sound to draw too much attention---ya see.---.....as to the sounds in the back seat...well....its a deep moaning growl.........makes ya think a bit as to what that can be about.....a number of things actually...........

I was driving down a residential street and there were a few old ladies outside I guess with their grand kids and they screamed at me to slow down when I was crusing at 20-25 MPH. My exhaust drones between 1600-2000 RPM's so it must have sounded like my foot was to the floor.

:o And you say the guy was a Sergeant 03Silverstreak? You would think by the time he must have had on the job to make rank the guy would be more "seasoned" and just be thankful/happy for a quiet shift once-in-a-while. Did he show even the slightest bit of embarrassment for acting like such a "Barney Fife" with you? Crap like this is truly embarrassing:o.

I believe that is one of the factors of the Job today. Today many here in NY want to spend a small amount of time on the streets and want to advance to supervisor quickly so as 1.) make more money 2.) not have to be dealing with making arrest and handling prisoners and 3.) they can now deligate orders instead of being at the bottom taking them.
I speak from my Job change over the years . I can not speak of the state park police but the sgt was young and not too brite , for instance I have two FOP stickers on the rear window in plain view and a DEA
LOGO on the front windshield next to my Reg and he still was clueless.:shake: .

Man I'm glad I don't live up that way I would of been pulled over for sure when I had my side pipes lol. Had them on for a month, the drone was so bad it gave me a headache everytime I drove especially at hwy cruising speeds. Chopped off the rear exhaust from h-pipe back and had the pipes exiting right at the front of the rear tires. I can't believe I never got pulled over down here in MD and I had even counted how many cops I went by (27 total) that looked at my car and me and kept driving lol.

I would like to bring this question to the exhaust community here.
I am looking to put back the oem mufflers I removed or would the Edelbrock SDT Mufflers be better ?
I am looking for a more stealth sounding MM but also not looking to lose too many HP at the rear wheel.
What would be your choice ???

Well Adrian, having recently installed 2.5" x 18" glass packs on an otherwise stock exhaust system I can honestly say the factory mufflers are pretty restrictive. I haven't got on the dyno yet but the rear wheels will start to break loose from a roll in second gear - w/out down shifting. The sound level was really obnoxious untill I cut the harmonic dampers off of the oem mufflers and installed them on the glass packs. This cut the cabin drone down to a fraction of what it was! It is pretty loud out the back at WOT.
I strongly recomend a straight through design vs. anything w/baffles if you want maximun hp. Think about multiple muffler per side or muffler/resonator combos. Check w/Sal - MadMax was pretty quite when I was following it the other weekend - that's a S/C 5.4l!

Hi paul- Well the next step is to consider offset/offset in/out with a new set of Borla or magnaflows XL3 turbo mufflers...
After some research and reading just about every thread about oem vs aftermarket mufflers , I have come up with the Magnaflow XL3 Turbo mufflers.
They are stainless steel inside and out and internally configuered like the oem mufflers. I also decided to order them in 3 inch in/out so as not to restrict the exhaust flow from the muffler. although the pipes
are 2-1/4 to the factory meg-tips , it should lower the exhaust sound during mid range and crusing speed .
