I am in the middle of putting my new rotors on this may be a dumb question but should the slots angle forward or towards the back

Slots aren't important. Check the direction of the fins. They should be installed so the fins pull air from the inside to the outside of the rotors. Some rotors do not have directional fins, but have straight fins instead. Note that Baer and KVR are slotted in opposite directions.

^^ What he said.
Slots can run (and do) many ways, it's mfg's preference. The castings dictate the rotors rotation. Most of your stock replacements are non or universal; meaning straight vane and can be on either side of the car. Directional rotors found on most BBKs are intended to flow more air are cast for this.
